I'm getting a "boot disc failure" when I boot my PC first thing every day.I usally hit the reset button and it boots normally. When it fails it asks me to insert the system disc and hit enter.....is that the XP disc? Is there a separate disc I need to get or make to boot this unit if and when the reset no longer works? Any help would be appreciated..
The disk boot failure could come from a number of sources. I can offer some solutions one or a combination of which will
hopefully correct the error.
First, check your BIOS settings to
see if S.M.A.R.T drive reporting is enabled. To enter into BIOS please tap F2 key at start up. In the BIOS screen, if the S.M.A.R.T drive is enabled, disable it and
give it a test run of 2-3 days under a regular rebooting cycle to see if
the error persists. S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting
Technology)is a somewhat outdated standard developed as an "early
warning" system to detect hard disk issues. If your desktop is newer, it
may not even be available as an option as it is not widely used these
days. The SMART technology while useful under certain circumstances had
an extremely wide margin of error and would throw errors on boot
occasionally when there would be nothing from either a physical or
configuration standpoint failing or pending failing in the drive.
we're in the BIOS, I'd recommend that you ensure that it is recognizing
the drive correctly on each startup. The easiest way to ensure this is
to reset your BIOS default settings. While on the BIOS screen, look for
an indication either along the top or bottom designated by one of the
function keys (I believe it used to be F10 to restore defaults). Be sure
to save your changes and exit. Again, where you did not get the error
every time, you may need to monitor it's progress to see if the error
Second, physically check all cabling. A loose or in some
cases failing IDE cable (assuming it is an IDE and not SATA connection)
will produce these errors in the Pavilion line (and most others I would
well imagine). Power everything completely down, remove the side of the
case to give access to the drives and start with reseating the cable
both at the drive end and the controller (where they plug into the
motherboard) ends. Ultimately, if you were to pick up (or could somehow
borrow) a different IDE cable to test for a short time it may also call
out a failed or failing cable as well.
Third, we can't overlook
the possibility of a failed drive itself. Formatting and/or recovering
the drive will most likely not correct an error of this type. If any of
the steps resemble those suggested above and have
already been attempted, the issue may well point to the disk itself. How
old is your system out of curiosity. I realize this
option is quite a stretch given the timeframe.
issues with the drive itself however, if all steps listed above don't
correct the errors, there could be a strong possibility of a failing
disk. Since you say it will boot on occasion the failure may not be
severe enough at this stage to completely fail, but a total inability to
boot may be looming on the horizon.

First - re-seat the hard disk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot and go into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If it doesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty. Then the hard drive needs to be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer or laptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioning computer/laptop again.
Your computer is trying to boot from a Network or Lan. You need to go
into the Bios or System Setup and change the boot order or boot
Reboot the computer and notice what key the screen says to hit to get
into the Bios or System Setup and hit that key. Change your boot order
or boot sequence. The best sequence is to have the CD Drive 1st and the
Hard Drive 2nd. Changing this in the bios or system setup will make
the change permanent. Just make sure when you boot the computer that
nothing is in the CD drive unless you have a repair disc or operating
system disc in it.
You could make a temporary change but then you
will have to change it every time you boot. If you notice the screen
when you boot it also gives you the key to hit to change the boot order
or boot sequence. This will allow you to change it just for this time
that you are booting.
This message means that the computer could not find the MBR (master boot record) & the most likely cause is a hard disk failure. To prove this obtain an installation disk of an operationg system, say Windows XP, place the disk in the drive, and while its booting up, press F2. From the menu set the boot order to... 1. CD rom drive. Save and exit. The machine will now begin to install the operating system to your hard drive. If you get the same message again, you have a hard drive failure and it will have to be rep-laced.
This is most likely due to a HDD failure, Try to boot the computer off a windows disc and try to get to the command prompt through the recovery utility. Once you have a command prompt if possible, type in chkdsk /r hit enter. If you cannot get this far, try uninstalling the hard drive, remove battery, work off the ac adapter only and reinstall the HDD and try to boot it up, if it boots, turn off, reinstall the battery and reboot, hit F8 and choose "last known good configuration".
First, ensure that the bios is reading the hard drive and that the hard drive is part of the boot sequence. If you have a known working drive and the drive is not been read by the bios, you will get the Disc Boot failure error because windows resides on the disc which the bios cannot access.
Secondly, if the bios is reading the disc then ensure that the disc is set as part of the boot sequence-preferably the item after DVD drive should be Hard Disc in the boot menu.
If both of these items are in correct order then you could have a bad boot sector on the drive. Run a C:Chkdsk. If no bad sectors are found try C:Fixmbr-ensure that the Windows installation disc is in the CD/DVD drive when running Fixmbr.
If that fails do a clean install of windows.
Your boot menu for Windows is corrupt. Try to boot from the windows installation disc and make sure to key any key when told to boot off the disc. Once the windows files load, you will have a choice of what to do next. If you have XP, choose the repair option and you will be faced with a black DOS screen...after the blinking cursor type
FIXBOOT hit enter Try to boot the computer without the disc in it. If it does not boot, then boot off disc again and this time type:
FIXMBR hit yes and enter
Try once again to boot without the disc.
Also try to boot into safe mode by tapping F8 when you see the Compaq name come up during starting. If you can get to the multiple boot up option screen, scroll to "Safe mode with networking" and choose that. If it boots then you can go to the start button > accessories > system tools > system restore > choose a restore point back a day or two and follow the prompts.
If you have Vista, boot off the disc and choose start up repair. If that doesn't work, boot again and choose restore computer to an earlier time. Again choose a restore point back a few days. Good luck ParrotHead PC Repair
