I have a gateway gt4022 running windows xp. When I turn it on it doesn't boot - even to a bootable disc - it just sounds like it's cycling but nothing comes on - any ideas?

Please post any beeps or error messages you get (if any). Do you see anything on the screen?
Please rate this solution if it has helped you.
    Thanks, Gary

The blue light did come on but now it doesn't - only cycles on the CD Reader. I do hear the fan though. I'm leaning toward motherboard - any suggestions?

No beeps, no error messages, the screen says no input - I checked the monitor and it works on another pc. Checked the power plugs inside (took static precautions) and turned it back on - now I get no blue light on the power button and the CD light blinks as it cycles - you can hear it trying to power up. I'm leaning toward trashing and getting a new one since this isn't the first problem - I had to replace the motherboard once a few years ago - After reading all the problems on this site maybe Gateway is the problem.

Probably hardware failure. To test that remove all disks and extra components and try again to boot into BIOS. If you can't then you will know for sure. If you can then take the opportunity to change the boot order and put the cd first and the hd second. Now connect an optical unit and try to boot in a bootable disk, preferably a Linux Live-CD. If you can then the hard disk is dead, replace it.

This looks like a power source failure. And when that fails it usually takes other components with it. Time for a new pc.

to go to bios setting either u can hit F2 or F1 key. then u change the boot priority. set it to cd-rom device.
after that u can boot from any bootable cd.

for your operating system problem, boot from the xp bootable cd after setting boot priority, and then repair or reinstall your operating system. some files might have been corrupted.

I have a gateway 835gm and when i turn it on. It wont go pass the windows xp screen. it just keeps re-booting.

If you have a windows boot cd, use it to get to the first boot screen where it asks you if you want to repair it or install XP. Try repair first and run check disk. If this doesnt work, then instead of pushing repair, press ENTER and do a reinstallation repair.

If you dont have a windows boot cd then you can download this ISO and burn it to a CD. It will boot and allow you to have a lot of diagnostic programs.

http://www.ubcd4win.com/index.htm

Go to this site and make a bootable cd. Once you have made it, go to the diagnostic category for hard drives. Run check disk first, then run the other ones if necessary. If it is a problem with the fileing system, then one of these tools will probably fix it.

I have two operating systems on my hard drive.

Hi,

You can manually disconnect the IDE/SATA cable temporarily from your motherboard (the one with NT PRO & XP HOME), then you can cleanly install a Windows XP on your new Hardisk. And after installing, you can re-connect the other hardrive on your computer and format it under your NEW Windows XP, be sure to set the BIOS BOOTUP sequence that you boot on the right drive.

Gateway computer reboots automatically

To get into Safe Mode, just as the PC starts press the F8 key on the keyboard every 2 seconds. Windows will open a Dos like screen where you can pick how you want to start windows. Safe Mode is listed there. If this does not help you find your problem I can tell you that windows is confused (startup files). Two ways to fix this. One is to run system restore. 50/50 chance that will work. Two put your Windows CD in the cdrom & boot to it. Allow windows to repair it's self. You will not loose your data that way.
