HI. I will need the entire model number. You have only posted the prefix. There are 3 number before the period that I need. This is important due to the fact that, every Kenmore dishwasher has a different sump orientation.

Please post the entire model number so that i may post proper instructions on how to clean your fine particle filter and chopper assembly.

Okay, If you have an air gap installed on the drain line of the dishwasher, check the air gap to see if it is clogged. This would prevent the dishwasher from draining and is a common area of concern when draining is slowed. Next; Check to see if you hear the pump running when it is in the drain mode. This dishwasher uses the same pump for recirculating and draining the dishwasher liquids. It runs in the opposite direction to drain. If the pump is not running in the drain mode, you could have a failed pump motor, a bad timer or a wiring fault. A service tech will normally be needed to diagnose and repair this type of problem.

Now; If the drain pump is running(in drain mode), then you will ,most likely, have a clog in the sump or the drain hose of the dishwasher. A common area for a clog in this dishwasher would be in the drain check valve. The picture i have posted below shows your model of dishwasher placed on its back. Drain water evacuates the sump through the check valve and then out the drain hose. Foreign objects and light debris can get stuck in the check valve and prevent the dishwasher from draining. A service technician is normally needed to access and check this area, due tio the complicate state of the disassembling process.

With that said; You can access the power filter or separater by removing the racks and disassembling the top section of the sump. This can be done with out removing the unit from the cabinet. Once the top section of the sump is removed, you will expose the filter or seperater for inspection. Make sure to check your air gap before checking the filter. If the air gap and filter are clear of debris, the pump or check valve will need to be inspected by a tech.

NOTE_ You can pull the drain hose to check for blockages by removing the bottom toe panel. This will expose the hoses and pump.

Click Here to view an exploded view of the sump and pump sector. The filter/seperator will be labeled number 9 on the diagram provided. This is basically your"filter". The part labeled number 14 will be mounted on top of the filter assembly. There are five screws to remove to release the outlet pump, which is labeled number 14 on the diagram. Once the outlet pump is removed, you can inspect the filter. Removing the outlet pump will also expose the impeller, as well. There are four screws in the impeller sector to remove. Once these are removed, you can extract the filter assembly for cleaning, if needed.

    • The pump gasket must be replaced if the sump assembly is disassembled.

You say to check the air gap first. If it is installed where would it be located. I'll have to run the machine again and listen for the pump. Also I have taken the top part of the washing system off down to the screw on top and in center of the fine screen. . how do I remove this screw ? when I turn it the whole thing turns. I tried to feel on the bottom of the unit through the access panel and ther is no way to put a wrench in or on a nut or bolt.

Ok, that center screen screw is actually screwed into the motor shaft. this is why it move freely. The screw can be removed my stopping the motor form rotating. Once you have braced the motor, it will stop rotating, thus , alloeing for the screw to be turuned. The air gap is located in the sink, near the faucet. check to see if it
is clogged. Unscrew the top cap and see if there is anything blocking inside. If there is an air gap installed, it is very common that a hose going from the air gap into the garbage disposer is clogged. Remove and clean the hose. Make sure to reattach the hose before starting the dishwasher.

Here is a quick video on how air gaps work

    • Note: If there is no air gap installed, the dishwasher might not drain properly.

i have a double sink ...no air gap... my dishwasher drain hose is connected to the drain system of the second sink. connected into a trap and then into the down drain line of this second sink.i guess i should get as moch water out of the unit and then remove the drain hose to see if there is anything in it. this am when i ran the unit the drain pipe at the trap felt warm or hot. . i didn't listen to hear if water was actually running into the drain system. i guess i have some more research before calling the tech in , just to make sure of what my problem is. be talking to you. thanks for your help so far.

OK, be careful during your inspection. There are lots of sharp areas that can snag your skin.

Purge that drain hose, if needed.

    Michael Masters Jul 21, 2010

I suspect that the check valve is block. This will require a techs assistance. That inspection procedure can be very tough. It is not for the novice.

    Michael Masters Jul 21, 2010

On that diagram i posted, the check valve will be labeled number 15. This valve separates the drain hose from the base of the pump /sump housing. You will need to remove the dishwasher from the cabinet and turn it over on its back to access. The valve may be damaged or simply blocked. If that filter is clean, your blockage will be there in the valve assembly. remember, you will need to replace the pump gasket if you tare down the sump, completely. The pump base will be labeled number 25 on the diagram provided above..

Kenmore Dishwasher is not draining... checked drain line at disposal..not it. Have diassembled much of the housing at bottom of tub but still can't get to drain. Any suggestions?

Hi
Dishwasher not draining issue usually occurs due to kinked drain pipe, clogged drain filter or drain pump. First make sure that the drain is not clogged and remove clogs if present. If no visible lint is present then remove the lower front access panel to check the drain filter and drain pump for any clogs, you'll need to clean the drain filter and drain pump completely. Also, check for any food pieces stuck near the pump impeller & clean the chopper assembly. Please note that dishwashers don't drain out the complete water such that heating element doesn't overheat. Hope this helps... Please post back for any further assistance.

I have a Kenmore Ultra wash 665.16522. The water won't drain completely. About 2 or 3 inches of water will stay at the bottom. I wonder if there is a food catcher, and if so, how do I clean it? JSBravo
