Hi
Begin setup of your Linksys Wireless Router by first plugging in the power. Give it 10 seconds or so to initialize and then plug an ethernet cable into your wall jack and into the port on the back of the router marked Internet. Next get another ethernet cable and plug one end into your laptop and the other into one of the ports labeled 1-4 on the router. Your computer is now properly connected to the router to begin its setup and configuration.
thanks & rgds

What is the wep key for a linksys wrt54g

If this is the first time you are trying to use the wireless network of your linksys and you haven't change the settings of your wireless network, then you will be able to find the default WEP key at the back of the linksys router, just flip it and you will see a sticker there. Make sure to get the correct format because it is case sensitive. If you had set it up before then you need to connect the router directly to your pc using an ethernet cable and open browser. Type 192.168.1.1 and use admin for username and password. Click the wireless tab on the upper part of the screen and select wireless security. From there, you will be able to see the set WEP key. You can edit it from there as well.

I bought an Amazon "Kindle" Wi-Fi reading device

Hi,

I do not recommend that you use WEP for security as this is no longer a secure method for wireless network.

Setting up a wireless network can be a bit tricky at times, but if you follow this step by step guide for Linksys routers, you will have your wireless network up and secure in no time.
It will walk you through resetting the wireless router and quickly setting up a securing your network.

I don't have a solution -- I'm having the exact same problem and I'm looking for a solution. Called Kindle tech support, and all they could recommend was to go to McDonald's to see if I can connect using their wireless. They DID say this Linksys WRT54G router is a compatible router with the 3rd Gen Kindle.

How do I create a password for my linksys router?

Have a computer connected to the Linksys router (network)
Open a browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox and in the
address bar type:

http://192.168.1.1 [enter]

This will bring you to the Linksys router's login screen. The default
username is either "admin or left blank and the default password is "admin" or "password" without the
quotes. Enter that information. You are now in the router's
configuration utility.

Click on the Administration link at the top of the page. Enter your new
password. WRITE IT DOWN SOMEWHERE YOU WILL NOT LOSE IT. Re-enter the
password to confirm it and click the Save Settings button at the bottom
of the page. The router will restart and present you with the login box
again. Leave the username blank and put in your new password to get back
into the configuration utility.

This will set the new password to your router.

If you need to set a password for your network then....

Click on Wireless Security.
Under Security Mode, click on the Down Arrow and then select WPA-Personal, unless you have an older wireless network card in your laptop which can't use WPA, in which case, click on this for instructions on setting the Security Mode to WEP.
12) Under Encryption:or WPA Algorithms:, set this to TKIP.
13) Under WPA Shared Key, type in your desired password, which should be at least 8 characters long, but not contain any spaces or weird characters, such as $ % ^ & * #.
14) Click on the Save Settings button to save the settings.
15) Click on the Continue button.
16) Try accessing your favorite web site using the Internet Explorer, Safari, or the Firefox program, or check your e-mail with your e-mail program, such as the Outlook Express, Windows Mail or Apple Mail program.
Note: You may have to reset the Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router by unplugging the small, round black connector that plugs into the back of the router, then plugging it back in if you cannot access the Internet or your e-mail. If this doesn't work, try unplugging both the Cable or DSL Modem's power cord and the Linksys WRT54G, then plug the Cable/DSL Modem back in first, then wait about a minute, then plug the Linksys back in.

Good luck :)
