Question about HP Compaq nc6120 Notebook

1 Answer

My HP Compaq nc6120 PC notebook's screen works only until I get logged into the system, then slowly it starts to slightly fade and the screen "scrolls" up and down like an old TV set with bad reception. I used to be able to tilt the screen forward or backward to clear it up but now it's completely illegible and any tilting of the screen won't fix it at all. Any idea on if this is fixable and if so, what I would ask a technician to do? Any ideas on price to fix something like this?

The problem could be the LCD panel, the integrated video card, or could have something to do with the program, because the problem starts to appear after logging in.

The best thing to do to test it, is to try connecting an external monitor to the laptop and see if the same problem will occur. If the problem did not appear on the external monitor, then the problem could be the LCD.

If the same problem occur on external monitor, then it could be the integrated video card. The video card is where the LCD and the external video port is connected to. Try to restart the laptop then go to the BIOS settings. If the same problem appears when logged in to the BIOS, then it's the video card. But if not, your other option is to check the display settings and see if there's a vertical adjustment in your laptop.

The very last option that you have is to uninstall and re-install the operating system of your computer since you mentioned that it's only happening after logging in.

Any hardware problem should be consulted to the pro, in order to prevent bigger damage to the laptop.

Thank you and good luck!

Here's some better detail that might help the diagnosis: first I start the computer and the black Windows XP screen comes up and then prompt for my credentials. The screen starts to fade to gray immediately, even before the black Win XP screen appears, so I try moving the laptop screen to clear it up. Once it fades, then it starts scrolling - or flipping - up & down horizontally. Once it does this, then the screen goes to fixed colored vertical lines, with one horizontal line right through the middle. Again I try moving the laptop screen back n forth in tiny increments until I can get the screen visible again. But then I have to act quickly to use the cursor or type anything, because as soon as the screen starts to fade to gray, the computer seems to lock up or freeze at the point it was before the fading starts. This freezing happens too when the computer is in the middle of processing - the processing seems to freeze until the screen is clearly visible again. I'd like to try the BIOS thing if only I can unfreeze the screen long enough, or maybe this explanation helps you pinpoint what the real issue is? If not, is the BIOS thing done by simultaneously holding CTRL+ALT+DEL as the computer is booting?

Thank you for providing more information. By the way, sorry for the late reply.

Based on your statement, there are two things that I could see. It's the integrated video card and the operating system itself.

The first thing that you need to do is to uninstall and re-install the OS.Re-installing the OS should fix the computer from freezing. Then the next thing to do is to send your computer to the authorized repair center to check the video card and the LCD panel connection to the mother board.

If the video card is still okay, then it's just the connection between the LCD and mother board. But if not, they need to replace the video card.

    Thank you and good luck!

If you are using an external usb mouse, then there must be a loose wire connection. Try to replace our mouse and see if it's working properly now. Have a nice day friend.
