Question about Heating & Cooling

Hampton Bay 5200 BTU window AC cycling on and off frequently

Hampton Bay 5200 BTU window air conditioner cycling on and off very frequently. We use it upstairs for our child and it runs great when first turned on and cooling down the room. The problem is trying to maintain the temp. It will run for anywhere from seconds to a few minutes and then turn off for a few seconds or minutes. It has even turned on for seconds, turned off and then turned back on before the fan finished spinning. This is all with the energy saver mode. If set at 73, it is as if the unit is shutting down at 73.9 and turning back on at 74....that is how much it cycles on and off. Thanks for any help/tips

SOURCE: Air conditioner is not cooling. The fan is running. When I turn the thermostat past 7, the unit shuts down. Any ideas? Low on Freon?

Sounds like a leak to me - if you have a set of guages available (know anyone working in the refrigeration field???) you could tell this for certain.  Otherwise, try running it when it cools down outside and see what happens.  Take a stick thermometer, and put it in between the fins on the INSIDE condenser coil.  If they get cooler, but not down to about 50 degrees, then you are low on refrigerant.
Good Luck!

SOURCE: Energy Saver setting

Could not find a manual, but that setting is the setting that you choose to leave on and let the air conditioner decide the most effecient way to run during the day. There are too many ways to approach that answer in a small conversation. There are many things to consider and I will leave you with a link to a PDF that explains better of what I am writing. I have a Hampton Bay AC. It is 18,000 BTU. It is 230 volts. The EER is 9.7 and it is 8.3 to 9 amps. When I use energy mode on the AC it blows warm air. What gives? Just cool mode and it blows cool.

Hi Paul,
  • Energy Saver Mode most likely shutdown the compressor and Fan Only will be running to recirculate Ambient air into the room.
  • Make sure there is no Port or Vent that is open on your unit and would let hot air from outside be mixed in with the ambient air especially if it is hot outside.
  • Also refer to the troubleshooting section of your owner's manual.
Good Luck,
JP

What does the "dry mode" mean in a Hampton Bay air

"dry mode" normally means, to dehumidify only. this will not cool the air nor heat it consistently.

What does the "dry mode" mean in a Hampton Bay air

The "dry mode" dehumidifies the air. This is useful when you do not need to cool the air but the relative humidity is higher than you want to have inside. You get the advantage of bringing in the fresh air without increasing the indoor humidity.

I hope this helps.

(this applies to all air conditioners with a dry mode)

BTU

There should be a tag somewhere on it. Take the front grill off and look in the area where the fan blows out the grill face or below the evap coil face where your filter covers the coil
