HP Pavillion dv6000 series -- laptop CD/DVD drive quit working recently - computer doe not recognize that I even have one (on computer list) ... one USB port not working Sound has not worked since the first year I had it -- sent it in to HP - they did not fix the sound ... Sometimes when I turn on the computer, I'll have sound for about a minute - then it's gone... Purchased computer 2 1/2 yrs ago Other than getting a new computer, any great ideas?

With that many different problems, it seems most likely to be a motherboard issue. The sound card, DVD drive, and USB ports all interface on the motherboard, so if the board suffered some kind of damage (electrical damage, shock damage, if the laptop was dropped or jostled) it could have damaged or destroyed some of the motherboard components.

Replacing the motherboard on a laptop is time-consuming, labor-intensive, and can be almost as much money as buying a new computer. My recommendation would be to send it back to HP if it's still under warranty -- otherwise, you're probably better off getting a new computer.

There are several things you could try (such as swapping out the CD/DVD drive with another one if you have access to one, or trying external speakers to see if the sound works off of them) but with that many completely separate problems, the issue is most likely the motherboard itself.

Do you have access to a similar computer that you could switch parts with (at least the CD/DVD drive)? Can you try external speakers? If the computer is under warranty, send it to HP to fix, otherwise you'll probably spend more time, energy, and money trying to repair this one than it would cost you to get a new one.

If you're at the point where you're ready to look at new computers, HP has a lot of good laptops out now. Newegg has the HP G60-630 laptop with a 15.6" screen, Windows 7, and 3GB of memory for $524.99 after rebate and online savings. Or if you're looking for a netbook, CompUSA has a Compaq Mini 102 WH243UT netbook (HP owns Compaq) which comes with Windows XP, a 1.6GHz processor, and 1GB of memory for only $269.99.

These are only two of the many options you have for a new computer. Generally, new computers run excellently, but if you have been jaded by your current computer, you may want to consider purchasing an extended warranty or service plan.

    Good luck!

Base from the description of your problem this can be a motherboard related problem, like the USB port and the built in sound wont really work fine even when you first had the laptop.
But if you haven't tried reloading a fresh copy of operating system on the computer that will be a good thing to do , to have a clean installation of operating system on this laptop but if you will still have same problem after that it will really be better if you go get a new laptop rather than having this one repair and have the motherboard replace because that will also cost you just like a new laptop.

If you still want to continue using this laptop , the best thing to do with this problem is to replace the motherboard of that laptop that is causing the problem.

How can I tell if my HP Pavillion dv6000 can burn DVDs? I tried to with DVD Flick but the dvd came out blank after 3 hours of supposed burning.

Try creating a normal CD-R for example just a picture using windows transfer which is simply double clicking your CD drive icon in my computer dragging a picture on to it then burn the files should be on the left, if so then your burner should be fine. I Would suggest using NERO to burn DVD's

DVD drive does not show up in Computer drive list

Sounds like a cable or CD hardware issue. If you are comfortable taking apart the laptop yourself, disconnect /reconnect the cable or replace the CD cable. It's hard to update the driver if the system doesn't see the drive. Or, you could replace the drive. It's really hard to know which is the problem without testing.

Laptop hp dv6000 will not recognize cd burner/dvd player

HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop PC
Did you 'turn off' the AUTOPLAY feature of the CD\DVD ? When the player "runs two times at startup", it is trying to find the program on the disc.2nd- Look in internet for HP dv6000 cd\dvd drive replacement.(If that is the ""exact match for the product"" you wrote about)
3rd.goto CONTROL PANEL>SYSTEM>HARDWARE>DEVICE MANAGER and look up cd\dvd and uninstall it. REBOOT, when your system comes back it will try to find the cd\dvd. If it does not, it is damaged (kaput!), must be replaced. If Windows finds the cd\dvd drive and reinstalls the drivers, but it does not work, then the heads are dirty or damaged. That Windows found the dvd\cd means that the circuit on the device works.
