Question about Whirlpool WFW9200S Front Load Washer

1 Answer

Machine starts with a spin and then nothing happens. Loud clunkin

Thor TWM800 washing machine. Starts with a spin and nothing happens after that. Lound clunking noise and bounces across floor. unusable. Told by a serviceman needs new computer panel but on speaking to distributor told it is mechanical (crack or ball bearing) and machine is useless. Smokey tinge on computer panel is normal and is not generating the problem, therefore OK. Any comments appreciated.

Yes I agree with you. Thank you for confirming my suspicions that my machine is ready for the grave.

A faulty control board definitely cannot result in clanking noise and even a minor vibration. It's true that the issue is rather mechanical. based on the description of the problem, I can certainly deduce that the spinner support assembly, A.K.A spider assembly, has completely gone out. This is the three-arm assembly that holds the basket to the shaft. Unlike the basket which is stainless, the spider is made of aluminum that corrodes with time and usually breaks during the 6th or 7th year of the machine. You can certainly tell that it is the spinner support if your washer is at least 6 years old.

The bad news is, the spinner support cannot be purchased separately. It comes as a complete assembly with the basket which is covered by at least a 10-year warranty. The most frustrating fact is that the spinner support is not covered by the same warranty even though they come as an assembly which costs at least $500, a non-economical repair to invest.

Here are some videos showing what broken spider assembly looks like and how it makes the clanking noise when it is completely broken.

My washer is making a loud nosie when agitation starts

That is a normal sound when the transmission shifts from the last spin cycle to go into the agitate cycle. It should make a loud click sound that does not last longer than a second. There is nothing wrong with your washing machine.

My kenmore 800 series washer started draining but stopped 3/4 of the way and now won't do anything at all

Put the machine into the spin cycle and start as normal. Then with the lid open take a item like a pencil and depress into the lid switch where the lid pushes down on a switch. If machine starts spinning remove and replace lid switch. Let me know.

Washing Machine making a loud whirring noise when water is filling and when the machine is spinning out

Check the motor bearings If your washing machine is making a high-pitched whine or squealing noise while running, the main culprit is usually worn motor bearings. To check the motor bearings, remove the belt and run the motor by itself, listening for the noise. If it makes the noise, than the problem is most likely the result of worn motor bearings and has nothing to do with issues in the rest of the washer. Check for Obstructions Sometimes coins, bra underwires and other metal objects come loose in the wash and become stuck between the tub and the drum. Using a flashlight, take a good look inside the washing machine. If you see dents, scratches or dings, that's a sign that there either are or have been items bouncing around in there that can make a horrible racket. Check for Grease Spatter A high-pitched squealing can be caused when the grease thins around the bearing that's located under the tub. Open up the washing machine and check the interior for grease spatters or spots. That could mean that the grease has thinned out around the bearing and it's making the noise because of rubbing. Check the Drum for Irregularities Spin the drum by hand, listening for the noise. If it makes the noise in the same spot with each rotation, the problem could be with the washing machine drum itself. Parts of the drum can corrode over time, leaving it vulnerable to cracks or rust.

Loud clacking sound from the washing machine as spin cycle starts

Yes you either have a whirlpool or kenmore...since you didnt mention the make I guessed :) It sounds like you have a bad coupling, have included a link giving you instructions for replacing the coupling and a link where you can buy the coupling.

http://www.thisoldappliance.com/howto/Motor_Coupling.htm

p.s you don't actually have to remove the cabinet, the motor, pump and coupling can be accessed by tilting the machine back and wedging something under it so it does not fall on you while your working on it.

you can purchase the part from:

http://www.appliancepartspros.com/part_details.aspx?part_id=3963893

Hope this helps.
