Good day,
It's the most common problem on frost free machines. The defrost system is made up of 3 parts. The Main heater, which is located on the bottom of the cooling coil behind the rear wall in the freezer compartment. As well, there is a defrost thermostat in the same location, but clipped to the top of that same coil.
Lastley, there is a defrost control, usually located in the top of the fresh food compartment which based on time or temperature or both turns them off and on.
Below is a excellant tutorial on defrost systems including the many variations.
That is the most I can provide you with without a make, model number, and style as well as your technical aptitude.

Freezer is freezing, but fridge temp ranges between 40 and 50 degrees, problem?

Greetings,
usually this is a defrost problem...See if there is ice building up on freezer back wall and if so, you will find the evaporator froze over. I would first make sure you see or hear the freezer fan motor coming on. A evap fan not coming on will cause a no cool problem in fresh food section.

If there is ice on the freezer coil. It needs to be defrosted and then we can find the problem. Once its defrosted..it will work good as new until it freezes over again..The most likely problem is defrost thermostat or heater or timer or electric defrost board...you need to know how to use a meter to check these. The defrost thermostat can be bypassed to check it. use your meter to check the heater..if good, and you bypassed the thermostat and nothing happened..Its most likely the defrost timer or board. If a manual timer..you can advance it to defrost and see if it comes on.

if its an electronic defrost board, sometimes you can get them into a defrost by pushing the light switch in 5 times within 10 seconds..there may be a tech sheet on the refrigerator showing this
please let me know if you need more help....Bruce

Freezer is working refrigerator is not.

The freezer is not defrosting. Look at the back wall of the freezer section and see if it is frosted. Locate the defrost timer and advance it till it clicks once. This should advance the freezer to the defrost cycle. Check to see if the defrost heater is on. If the defrost heater is glowing behind the freezer rear panel the you know you have to replace the defrost timer. If the heater is not glowing then you have to check if the defrost heater or defrost timer is in default.

The freezer is accumulating frost. i have

Some models like yours came with a defrost control board and others came with a defrost timer. They should be found inside the fresh food compartment and behind the temperature control panel. You will need to inspect and let me know which you have. Unplug first. If the control board looks or does not look burned it could be bad. The timer can be turned clockwise until compressor stops and should remain stopped for about 25 minutes. and then turn itself back on. If these look good then we need to remove the rear panel inside the freezer and test the defrost element with one wire disconnected to check for continuity. Just to be sure the element has not burned out. The defrost thermostat is connected to the defrost element and will have open contacts inside it above 50 degrees. Do these test with power unplugged and let me know what you find. Sea Breeze

I do not know how to defrost my freezer Model MQU165BEW

There are no buttons to defrost your freezer except the off button. The unit is a self defrost. If it is freezing up then one of the defrost components have malfunctioned.

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.
  • if you already checked this and think it is a different problem then let me know, i will help you figure it out.

Refrigerator on the fritz

The defroster is not working. Ice build up prevents cold air from the freezer chest from blowing into the lower part.

The way the defroster works is this: There is a defrost timer, probably found under the refrigerator at the front, that turns on the defroster three times per day or so. That turns on a heater nested among the freezer coils. It keeps heating until the defrost thermostat gets warm; then it quits defrosting.

I think your defrost timer doesn't turn. You can turn it with a screw driver till you hear a click. Now your ice compartment should be defrosting. With ice buildup it may need lots and lots of defrosting. You might not get cooling back into the lower part for awhile, till the ice buildup melts.

By the preceding, you should know if the defrost timer needs replacing.

If you should need to manually defrost the freezer coils, they are, I think, under the floor of the freezer. To defrost them, I'm told, a hair drier works better than boiling water. The defrost thermostat is in there too, a one inch unit with two wires. It should have no continuity warm, closed circuit frozen. If it has open circuit frozen, that would be your problem.
