Question about Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1: Windows

1 Answer

I have a desktop PC, Gateway 5472. I am running Windows Vista, and a variety of productivity suites. It has a 500 GB hard drive, and 4 MB of RAM. My computer has an unusual problem...one which has perplexed me beyond description. 1) The computer shuts off in the middle of using it, without warning, without any kind of Windows messages, just shuts down. When I try to restart it, it boots for maybe 10 seconds, and then shuts off again. If I wait for an hour or so, it will reboot, but I have to run ''Launch Windows Repair'', at which point it goes through a repairing process, and eventually reboots. 2) Immediately prior to shutting down, the power supply fan is roaring like a 747, and the computer is very noisy! HELP!

Hi, Well looks to me a problem with either your Fan (or cooling system) or RAM (memory). If your machine shuts down itself (without restarting) most probably the Processor cooling procedure has failed. Without a warning the System will shut down immediately to avoid any damage to the Processor.

  • Have you experienced a 100% CPU usage? You can check it using your Task Manager.
  • Have you checked your System Temperature? If your System has a built-in Temperature monitor use it. Or you can check it using the BIOS. It has a location which displays System Parameters. Monitor the temperature. That has to be the problem.
  • Check your fan. If it has been damaged it will not be able to function as expected.
  • Make sure your power supply is able to provide enough power to the CPU Fan and other devices.
  • Make sure you fan has no loose connections.
  • Make sure that its clean.
  • If you have problems visible with your fan, please replace it.

  • Make sure that your Processor has no loose connections. Its must be installed to the slot or socket properly. The heat sink must be installed properly.
  • Make sure your power supply has no internal leakage or extensive heat.

  • If your machine Restarts without shutting down:
  • Most probably an Issue with your RAM or Hard Disk (or an Operating System Problem has been detected).
  • If it launches Windows Repair Process it might be a problem with one of these devices and / or the OS as well rather than CPU.

  • You can use the Event Viewer to check for System Related errors. What you have to do is type Run in the search box in the Start Menu, hit enter then.
  • In the Run box, Eventvwr.msc and hit enter.
  • Go to System category and check for Errors. (Red X mark represents errors).
  • Read the description and try to check whether an error is logged. If so please post it here for further assistance.
  • You may need some hardware knowledge to perform these tasks (except the Event Viewer and BIOS check). If you do not have any experience please take the machine to a tech.
Feel free to contact again. Comment here.
Please be kind enough to rate the answer as well!
Thanks for using Fixya! Have a good day!

Vista RAM usage ?

The minimum recommended ram for Vista is 1 GB, generally accepted practical minimum is 2 GB. A 1 GB system will be kinda laggy. Maximum RAM for 32 bit Vista is 4 GB.

Vista Home Premium is roughly equivalent to Windows XP Media Center Edition (Has Media Center, cann't be put on a DOMAIN type network)

Vista Business is roughly equivalent to Windows XP Professional (Can Join a Domain, Doesn't have Media Center)

Vista Ultimate has all available freatures of Vista, you can do any windows function with Ultimate

Bigger hard drive

I'm not sure if the motherboard supports SATA drives, so your best bet is getting any IDE (ATA) hard drive. It's up to you which kind you want. I've always been partial to Western Digital and Seagate.

If you are running Windows XP then you shouldn't have a problem with having a larger hard drive, I know Windows 2000 had some issues with them that required registery editing.
