Question about Maytag Refrigerators

2 Answers

Model is RSW22E0, side by side refrig/freezer. The temperature controls for both the refrigerator and the freezer are on the back wall of the refrig. with the refrig control on the right (as you stand in front of the doors looking at back of cabinet) and the freezer control on the left. The freezer control is a horizontal plastic dial which connects to a damper located between the freezer and refrigerator compartments. The problem is this control, the plastic damper, and other associated parts in this area of the refrigerator compartment stays iced up such that the control is inoperable. I have defrosted and removed the ice on two occasions, but it quickly comes back. Otherwise, the refrigerator/freezer is working properly. Any Ideas?

same issue, what's causing the ice to accumulate in this part of refrigerator compartment.Where can I find a schematic so I know where the thermistor and defrost control board are located?

I do have an area at the bottom of the refrigerator door 4-5" long which doesn't seal properly. It's not a large area, but this is what I suspected might be giving me the problem. Thanks for your help. Knowing that a leaking seal can cause this type problem gives me the confidence to proceed with a repair. Many Thanks.

Your getting too much moisture in the unit and that is causing the freeze up. Defrost the unit and clear the ice out. Dry the area out and let it cool down. The reason you are getting so much moisture in the system is most likely a bad seal on the doors. Replace the seals and it should resolve your issue.

The ice getting collected. This itself indicates that the problem is related to defrost. You are manually defrosting the ice.But as per the procedure this should be done automatically as per the fridge settings. So the defrost heater and the defrost board needs to be checked. As you have tried manual defrost so this is the other possibility to be tried. There is a thermistor on the top of the evaporator coil .This thermistor control the ice cooling on the unit.Replace the thermistor and check. If still the same problem then defrost control board is not functioning properly .It has to be checked and replaced. Also see if any of the internal electrical part of the unit got loose or not in contact. Keep the unit unplugged for 24 hours then reconnect and recheck. Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Hi,

All the cooling coils for this model are in the freezer section. There is a fan down there behind the back wall on the top. This fan directs air up to the fresh food section.

Check the temperature of the freezer you can do this by inspecting the ice cream, if the ice cream is soft you are above 5 degrees F. If you have a good cold freezer then the problem is with air flow, the evaporator fan that I spoke of could be bad).

If your freezer temperature is not as cold as it should be you may have a defrost problem, look for any signs of frost build up on the back wall of the freezer section, if you see frost you will most likely need to put in a new control.

If the freezer temperature is warmer than normal and you do not have frost you may have a sealed system leak, this will require a technician for sure.

GE Model GSS25TGNB CC died

If you do not see frost on the inside rear wall of the freezer , Poll the refrig out from the wall , and remove the back panel covering the compressor . If the compressor is not running , Remove the 8" X 10 " panel , just above the large panel first removed . Unplug the refrig . Remove the control board , and on the other side of the board ( soldered side ) , look just behind the small black boxes ( located on the other side ) and look for a joint which has become unsoldered . Resolder this spot and reinstall the board . Plug the refrig back in , and see if compressor starts . OR , you can replace the control board pt # WR55X10656 .

Pull refrig out from the wall and unplug . Remove the 8" x 10 " panel covering the main control board . On this board , unplug the blue plug with 3 larger wires going to it . The sequence looks like this : wire1,wire2,space,wire3 . Use a piece of wire , with both ends stripped about 1/4 " , and insert an end into wire2 and wire3 . Plug refrig back in . Look inside the freezer at the back bottom , and see if you see a red glow . It may take about 30 seconds for the glow to appear . If no glow appears , the defrost heater located at the bottom of the coils ( glass tube ) is probably shorted . Pt # WR51X10042 . Also replace the defrost thermostat Pt # WR50X10068 . To access these parts , the inside freezer panel has to be removed . If you do get a red glow , then the main control board is bad Pt # WR55X10656 .

Maytag side by side Model MSD2756GEW Freezer OK, Food sect hot

First you need to see if the venting from fzr to refrig is blocked......then check to see if there's frost on back wall of fzr. Frost would mean defrost heater is not working. *** It helps a lot also to know which model & serial you have. Those numbers can be found inside the refrigerator section on the side wall or ceiling on a tag.

Items in the back of the refrigerator freeze.

is this something that has just started happening? Most kenmore top freezers have a vent that allows cold air from the freezer into the refrig through a vent located on the back wall in the center of the refrig section. if packages are pushed up under this vent they can freeze.

If you have widespread freezing in the refrig setion then a temperature control could be the fault. thanks for using fixya. Peyton..

Freezer dethawed

By the end of the day we realized we thought the refrig. part was working but was not. We pulled it out from the wall, unplugged and plugged it back in. Still no results. I unloaded everything from the freezer in the morning and refrig in the evening. Right after I got almost the very last item out, (the door on the refrig was opened and left opened) I moved the temperature control levers back and forth quickly, really just out of frustration, thinking, 'great no more refirgerator' - now what am I gonna do?!. i went to dump the last of the contents, and like some sick joke, the refrig started working and then the freezer. We have quite a bit of dust under the refrig. that may have been blocking a fan or something. I think God just wanted me to empty the refig contents and things that looks like pieces of the moon from my ridge. Go figure. I am praying no more problems.
