I have toshiba satellite L100 laptop. my dvd ram device suddenly shows as cd rom device and do not boots up, however it shows cd rom icon sometimes. when i try to inject the media , it do not reads or displays anything. system hangs i click on the icon. I tried to upgrade the driver also, but do not helps.

  • AlexWillWin Jul 25, 2008

I have the same problem, except my error code comes up as '39,' instead. I've taken the automatic update and deleting my itunes (I don't really use Itunes on this computer anyway) routes, but nothing seems to work. And I've also tried looking up a place to just download the driver from, which I know is dangerous, so please don't give me some comments about how I shouldn't try and find it.

  • DESERT LQ Jul 27, 2008

YEP, NOTHING WORKS. I THINK THE ONLY WAY TO GO FOR THIS DRIVER PROBLEM IS TO INSTALL THE ORIGINAL DRIVER DIC THAT CAME WITH THE COMPUTER, IF YOU HAVE IT. FINDING THE DRIVER FOR THE DVD/CD OPTICAL DEVICE ON THE WEB IS LIKE LOOKING FOR A NEEDLE...YOU KNOW THE REST. UNINSTALLING AND REINSTALLING DOES NOTHING. GETTING RID OF I TUNES DOES NOTHING BUT GET RID OF ITUNES. GOOD LUCK. THANKS HP FOR THE CRAPPY DEVICE!!! WAY TO GO!!

  • raintoad Aug 09, 2008

I had this problem and had to fix it twice. First of all deleting Itunes did nothing.

I first decided to do a system recover back to the time the system worked. That worked only for one day. I finally broke down and sat on the chat line with HP. I wish I did this in the first place. The fix is much easier than banging your head against the wall. So.... for future reference here is the fix for an HP Pavillion dv2815nr with a HL DT ST DVDRAM GSA T20L ATA device:

You will need to delete the upper and lower filter from registry.

    steps:

    1. Tap Window key (flag key on the keyboard) and R key on the keyboard, at once.

    2. You would see the Run window on the screen. Type Regedit in the open field and click OK.

    3. Click plus sign (or arrow) next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

    4. Click plus sign (or arrow) next to System
    5. Click plus sign (or arrow) next to CurrentControlSet
    6. Click plus sign (or arrow) next to Control
    7. Click plus sign (or arrow) next to Class

    8. In the left hand window pane click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} to select that key
    9. In the right hand window pane select the UpperFilters registry key and press the delete key on the keyboard Confirm with an OK
    10. In the right hand window pane select the LowerFilters registry key and press the delete key on the keyboard Confirm with an OK
    11. Click on the "X" in the upper right hand corner of the Registry Editor window to close it

    After that......

    12. Open the device manager window Tap (Window key (flag key on the keyboard) and R key on the keyboard, at once) Type in devmgmt.msc

    13. Expand DVD/CD-ROM Drives and right click on the device and select uninstall.

    14. After uninstalling, plese click on the system icon on the top and select scan for new hardware changes.

The systm will update and will fix the problem. I hope this helps.

Hello, I'm a novice coputer user, but I have been at this for two months now every day trying to solve this issue. I have a dv9535nr with HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20L ATA DEVICE, suddenly it stopped working. HP Chat Support took me through a series changes and adjustments, I can't describe them too well, but they could not solve the problem. Then I contacted Microsoft and they went back & forth with me. Finally from frustration that they could not solve my issue, they told me: "We suggest you contact HP for support, pre-installed Windows is usually a manufacturer support item." In other words, from frustration, they tried to get rid of me. I then looked at the labels on the door of the CD/DVD slide out tray. I went to the LightScribe web site and downloaded the troubleshooting configuration tool. I received an error which led me to the link on the HP web site which has the update for the software. I've downloaded it but I still can't make my CD/DVD burner work.. I hope this helps someone who knows about computers - so here is the link to the site: The description as I cut and paste it here is: "ENHANCEMENTS:
    - Adds support for HLDS Slim DVD Writer (GSA-T20L) (147)." Here is the Link: http://h20239.www2.hp.com/techcenter/lig... , the description and all models are listed on the following link: ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/sp35001-35500/sp35384.html

Now I downloaded it, but I don't know how to make it work. I hope this helps everyone who is as frustrated as I am. Please contact me if you figure out how to make it work with detailed instructions, as I am a total beginner. Thanks and GOOD LUCK!

Ditto. I bought this Compaq Presario F700 refurbished laptop from buy.com on 10/3/08. Just installed MS updates tonight and exactly as described in this post, the drive mysteriously stopped working. Error 10 -- Device Driver Cannot Load. I guess I've been 'had' so to speak judging by what I've seen here.

Yeah, nutty as it sounds. Same problem with HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH15L. Several hours of searching for new drivers without success and came across this post. Uninstalled ITunes and it's back working fine. GGgggrrrrrr

×

Comment by raintoad, posted on Aug 09, 2008 I had this problem and had to fix it twice.

This solution WORKS!!! This is also working if you get error code 39 and it works for internal devices as well !

I have Windows 7 on a HP laptop with the above driver. This solution works, thank you so much!

Interesting side note: before I fixed this, I tried to burn an audio CD-R via Windows Media Player. WMP never recognised the CD, and it did not look like burned anything onto it. However, the CD was ruined and even after the fix that CD-R was not recognized by WMP. So if you do use this solution, be sure to test it with an untouched CD-R!

I got excited about this posted fix, since it involves exactly the same DVD drive as I have on my HP laptop. Unfortunately, once I get to that folder in the registry, there are no selections like "upper" and "lower" filters. I imagine this fix could be adapted, but I don't know how to do it. Meanwhile, my DVD drive is totally invisible to my computer.

Error Code 10 loadTOCNode(2, 'moreinformation'); If the device has a "FailReasonString" value in its hardware key, that string is displayed as the error message. The driver or enumerator places this registry string value there. If there is no "FailReasonString" in the hardware key, the following generic error message is displayed:
This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed. (Code 10)

Try upgrading the device drivers for this device.
Solution button: Update Driver

To resolve this error code, make sure the device is connected to the computer correctly. For example, make sure all cables are plugged in fully and that all adapter cards are properly seated. Follow the suggested solution button and update the device driver. It may be possible to remove the device and redetect it using the Add New Hardware wizard.

Comments by RAINTOAD worked. Many thanks. Mine is Acer 5735 laptop and the only difference being that I coulld not find Class folder. So I copied the long file address and asked Regedit to find the file. It did and the rest was as per the remaining instructions. Brrriliant. I just wished I had done this first instead of reconfiguring my machine twice over.

Hi there.
Wanted to share the solution I found on the problem many have with "HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20L ATA Device"
Suddenly this drive stops working and cannot read any discs CD or DVD.
I have an ASUS V1S running Vista 32-bit, but I guess the solution works on any (notebook) PC.
1. Remove the "HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20L ATA Device" from device manager
2. Shutdown computer
3. Remove the drive physically from computer.
(My PC, ASUS V1S, is a notebook, so obviously removing the CD/DVD drive is a lot easier than with a desktop computer)
4. Start the computer and login.
When logged in, slide in (or reconnect) the CD/DVD drive (on the notebook the CD/DVD is a hot-pluggable device). The "HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20L ATA Device" is now detected and drivers are reinstalled correctly and the drive works again. :-)
Good luck!

Dear Sir/Madam, I have a Dell notebook with an Optiarc RW AD-5540A DVD player. Now I have "error code 10" = "the device cannot start". How can this be fixed? I am not computer literate, really. thanks....

An error code 10 error occurs when Device Manager can’t start a hardware device. This error is usually caused by corrupted or outdated drivers, so most often the solution is very easy.
  • The first solution to to restart your machine. Some error messages can be caused by a temporary problem.
  • Next, did you just install a new device or Windows update? If you did, this might have caused the problem. Either roll back the driver you installed, or use the System Restore to undo recent Device Manager changes.
  • The most common fix for a Code 10 error is to uninstall and reinstall your device drivers. If it is a USB device device is generating the Code 10 error, uninstall every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers hardware category in Device Manager as part of the driver reinstall.
  • You might also try to update the drivers for your device, if a more current version is available.
  • You can run an update for the Windows Service Pack. There might be a patch available which will solve your error.
  • If none of the above solved your problem, you should take out your DVD drive and test it in another laptop, if possible, or connect it to a desktop computer using a converter.
  • If all of the above solutions don’t fix it, you might need to replace your DVD drive.
To update the DVD drivers, you have to search your computer manufacturer's website for the drivers. However, here's an easy way:
Use this driver scanning tool, which scans your computer for the needed drivers. It has an option to automatically retrieve them for you.

You can download this free tool from here, or directly from this link.

After you have downloaded the above file, double-click on it and follow the simple steps to install it. Then, when it asks if you want to run it, just answer yes. This is easier than manually searching, downloading and installing the drivers.
Hope that helps.
Regards,
Raspal

I have a emachine T3646 and the cd drive will not work. I get the error code 10 in device mgr Device can not start. I tried to download new software but get an error message saying the software was found...

try this one:
if you are using windows XP

- click start
- click run, in the run type in regedit
you will see a registry editor window
in the registry editor window

- click the + sign at the hkey_local_machine
- click the + sign of system
- click the + sign of currentcontrolset
- click the + sign of control
- click the + sign of class

there will be bunch of random letters and number under that control
try to find this one
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

if you click this check if you will be able to see DVD rom at the right side of the registry editor window
you must delete the upper and lower filters
after that restart the computer and try to put in dvds

for vista or win7

- click start and type in the start search regedit
after this just do the same thing with the win xp instructions

----------------

if still doesnt work try to uninstall/reinstall the cd/dvd driver

---------------

try also to update the DVD codec. you can also try to download the most updated windows media player, power DVD or any software/program that have dvd codecs or that acts like a player for DVD

i hope this works.

Error 39 canot load the driver

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Uninstall and reinstall the driver

Uninstall the driver from Device Manager, and then scan for new hardware to install the driver again.

You may be prompted to provide the path of the driver. Windows may have the driver built-in, or may still have the driver files installed from the last time that you set up the device. However, sometimes, it will open the New Hardware Wizard which may ask for the driver. If you are asked for the driver and you do not have it, you can try to download the latest driver from the hardware vendor’s Web site.
  1. On the device Properties dialog box, click the Driver tab, and then click Uninstall. Follow the instructions.
  2. Restart your computer.
  3. Open Device Manager, click Action, and then click Scan for hardware changes. Follow the instructions.
