SOURCE: Kenmore / GE side by side defrost drain keeps freezing up

Remove back of unit and check defrost heater has not become detached, otherwse the is only two possibilities, one a defrost fault and although you say the defrost tube is clear the only reason it does not flow is due to a restriction, what can happen is that the water backs up the drain pipe and then freezes before the water in the external tray can evaporate. SOURCE: subzero 550 water drain in refrigerator section backs up

The problem is that the water freezes in the drain, either because the door is not sealing good, it's open too often or there is mold in the catching tray and tube. Best solution is to take a turkey baster (pump), disconnect the flexible tube from the tray, by pulling down, take a large cup with very hot water mixed with a spoon or 2 of Clorox, fill the baster with that mixture and pump it on the drain tube. You have to do it several times, water will come out, but do it until you hear a "woosh" sound and the water goes freely on the drain. Also spill some of that mixture in the tray so it kills the mold.

SOURCE: kenmore colspot freezer drain line keeps freezing

Hi, The defrost drain behind the rear freezer panel is plugged. Remove the rear panel and clear the ice away from the drain. Then you will need to flush the drain hole with hot water to make sure it is open.
Some models require an after market drain heat kit.
Please get me your model # and I can look this up to let you know if you need that heat kit.

Thanks

SOURCE: drain line stopped up on defrost model

Unplug the power to the Fridge, take the items out of the freezer. There is a bottom tray that's inside the freezer that has 2 or 4 screws, remove the screws that holds the floor to the freezer and lift it out. You will probably see a sheet of ice on the bottom of the freezer. You may have to take off the back cover which is inside the freezer, it covers the evaporator. Then you will want to defrost the ice, do not use a heat gun it will melt the inside of the freezer. Best way to thaw it is leave the power off and melt it with hot water (not boiling). Either wet vac out the water as it melts or use a hand towel to mop it up. Sometimes a turkey baster will work to squeegee it out. There is a drain hole in the back that you will see as the ice begins to melt. That needs to be clear and the only way to clear it is to cover it with hot water. You will know that it clears and working when you see the water drain out thru the drain hole in the back of the inside of the freezer. By the way the drain drains thru a pipe thru a tray that's on top of your compressor. That's what heats it and makes it evaporate. Be advised that as you see that it is clearing, you can stop dumping water down there as some may get on the floor as the pan may overflow and dump water on the floor. If that happens, just mop up the water from the floor. Now put it back together again and plug it back in and you should have no further problems.

Sanyo side by side door fridge is not defrosting, what to do?

bonjour,
Trouble comes in 3's
If there is never any water in the drip pan under the refrigerator it is not defrosting and the evaporator drain line may be stopped up. Side by Side refrigerators cool the freezer first and send a small amount of cold air to the refrigerator side. To start defrost the defrost timer stops the compressor and all fans. Next it turns on the defrost heater. This melts the ice/frost off the freezer coils. The water drips down the drain line to the drain pan under the unit. If the defrost heater raises the temperature too high the defrost termination thermostat turns the heaters off. When the defrost timer finishes it turns off the heaters and turns the compressor and fans back on. If the drain line clogs with food the water does not drain out and when the compressor starts again the water freezes. If this keeps happening the ice gets higher and bigger until it clogs the coils and the freezer does not get cold. If the defrost termination thermostat turns off the defrost heaters too soon all the frost is not melted from the coils. And the coils soon clog and the freezer gets too warm. No defrost usually means either a bad defrost timer, a clogged drain line, a bad defrost termination thermostat or some combination of the three.
If the drain line is not stopped up you can try this.
Remove all food from freezer and refrigerator, open the doors and unplug the cord. Wait 30 hours for all the frost to melt.
Keep the doors open and the cord unplugged the whole time. Empty the drain pan to keep it from over flowing. After 30 hours plug it back in and wait for 1/2 cup of water to turn to ice in the freezer. Then you can put the food back in. The problem can return if the unit is not defrosting. Or you can call a service technician.

Hello, coils will freeze either to low airflow or low refrigeramt charge. Make sure filter, blower wheel and evaporator coil are clean. If they appear clean there is a low refrigerant charge.

Water freezing on the bottom of freezer

You have a problem with your auto defrost system. The drain line that should take the defrost water down to the drain pan in plugged up.If you look inside the freezer way down at the bottom and back you should be able to see the drain trough and the start of the drain line. You need to defrost the trough and clean out the line. You can also move the refrig. out from the wall and try to get to the drain that way.I hope you find this helpful.

The backed up ice must be completely removed and the line cleared all the way to the collection pan.make sure the frig is positioned so the water drains quickly. you can also wrap a piece of 10 gauge copper wire around the defrost heater and allow it to stick into the drain hole a few inches without touching the drain tube to keep it from refreezing again. Sub Zero 550

Clarkk what that metal strip is doing is transfering heat from the heater to the drain to keep it from freezing. Make sure that the metal is connected tightly to the heater. I have used 14 guage copper wire to build this strap to help resolve the issues. This will keep the drain from freezing. You can if you want get what is known as a drain heater. It is wired in with the heater and slides down the drain and heats the drain when the heater is on.

Subzero 550 coils

I had same problem very recently.  The problem with both the refrigerator and freezer on the 550 is that the drain line that takes condensation and water from the defrost cycle to the drain pan freezes up. Sub Zero parts suppliers will sell you a fix-it kit which I used for the refrigerator.  The kit is simply a heater wire that you plug into one of the existing circuits and runs down the length of the drain pipe to keep it from freezing up.  When my freezer started doing the same thing I ordered the kit for the freezer but the wire was too fat for the drain pipe so a Sub Zero rep gave me a better and more elegant solution.  You need a length of bare 12 guage copper wire, about 24 inches.  Run it through the drain pipe with about 6 inches exposed at each end.  On the underside of the fridge, wrap the end of the copper wire a few times around the black heater coil that you will see running back and forth.  At the upper end, wrap the copper wire around the black heater coil that defrosts the freezer coil.  The heat generated by the two coil will simply conduct heat through the copper wire and keep your drain line from freezing up.  There is a 90 degree bend in the drain line which makes it difficult to feed the copper wire through.  I suggest using guitar string or picture hanging wire as a snake.  Feed that through first, then us it to pull the copper wire through.  Good Luck!
