Question about Computers & Internet

2 Answers

Hi, I bought a Windows 7 , to put in my laptop which had Windows Vista before; This is what I did: I turned on the comnputer and pressed F12 so I could boot the system from the CD/DVD Player, so selected that option, then I followed the instructions and chose to erase my HardDrive so I could install Win 7; afterwards, whenenver I turn my Computer on, after the message "STARTING WINDOWS" the screen goes completely black and the only thing you can see is the mouse arrow in the middle of the screen, I can move it but it doesn't seem that I installed right. What should I do to fix that problem? I've tried to install it again more than 5 times, but still nothing happens after that. Thanks.

I've tried more times to install it, and it seems to me that the computer gets stocked somewhere in the process, right after the "STARTING WINDOWS" message with the Windows 7 Logo appear; I left the computer working for 2 days, and nothing happened yet. Is there someway to know which part is damaged... I'm thinking that could be the DD, but not sure about it.

You don't have to install Windows 7 over Vista. Windows 7 offers upgrade option over vista.

First thing to be done is, you need to run recover on your laptop using the inbuilt recovery console (provided by default by the manufacturer).

You can upgrade the OS to Win 7. Please check the below link to find the step by step instruction from Microsoft.

In the above link you will see 6 Tabs (Overview, Step1, Step2, Step3, Step4 & Step5). Check all these tabs to know how to upgrade the OS.

Please reply for any details

HI, well this so far sounds OK, It takes some considerable time to do it all. It may take a real 5 mins or so to sort itself out before it continues with the Install.
I wonder if you just need to be a little more patient?, I have had similar things happen myself, and this isn't unusual.
You seem to have done it correctly, Boot off DVD, select Version of Windows to install, proceed. It sometimes as said, takes some time for the Operating System to gather all the data and format and then install the files and then configure.
It is small comfort now, but you may have been better suited upgrading to Win 7 instead of, a Wipe and Install.
Perhaps if you can gain access to another machine and you can remove the HDD, and Format it via a HDD to USB dongle, After Formatting on another machine, return it to the original machine and try to proceed with the install that way, this usually works, with recalcitrant machines. Just please remember that it can take some time. Also it is helpful, if you download and store, on say a USB Drive, ALL the Drivers you need for Win 7, this will help the install go smoothly, and ensure you have the drivers to continue.

Hi, there is the thing, before I wanted to change my OS to Windows 7 I had troubles with accessing into Windows Vista, everytime I turned the computer on, I couldn't logged in beacuse there was a problem with the software, so I thought about upgrading the complete OS.

So do you think I sholud let the computer works when the black screen with the mouse arrow appears as long as it can take after that step is completed? Beacuse I had done that before for about one and a half day, and it didn't do anything else that I could see right.

    Kind Regards

My cable company put my computer in 'safe mode' &

Try simply restarting your computer from the Start menu or shutting it down from there and see if it helps.

But if it doesn't do this:
Turn off your PC or restart it (from the Start menu)
Before Windows Logo should appear keep pressing F12
Select the option to Start Windows Normally.

This should definately work, but if it still doesn't:
Restart your PC or turn it off and then back again (do it from Start menu)
Keep pressing F12 (before Windows Logo should appear)
Select the option to Repair your computer
Follow the instructions it gives you.

But if this doesn't work = reply and I will give you further instructions.

Password lockout .i bought it second hand . cannot get refund. can i install windows 7 without password?

Hi Howie,Absolutely you can install Windows 7 without the password. What you're going to need to do is get a copy of the Windows 7 install CD. Put that in your CD/DVD Drive and then restart you're computer. While you're computer is turning on, press F12 to access the boot menu. Select the CD/DVD drive, and then you should see a message saying "press any key continue...". Press any key on the keyboard. You can then follow the on-screen instruction to reinstall Windows from scratch! If you need any more assistance, please feel free to ask.Alex

Hi and Welcome to Fixya

Yes, you can change the operaitng system to Windows 7 32 bit. All you need to have is the licensed version of windows 7 32 bit. Boot upthe computer from that disk by pressing F12 key when you turn on the computer. Select the ODD drive to boot the computer to the windows 7 disk then you are good to go.

My computer, a lenovo y510 laptop malfunctioned. After inserting the recovery, and attempting to boot from the disk, the screen simply goes blank instead of opening the normal vista install center.

Hi lightning_ha,

Based on your situation, I suggest trying the following steps:

1. Turn on the system then insert the recovery disk inside the ODD.

2. Now turn off the computer while recovery disk is inside.

3. Turn on the computer, the moment you press the power button, immediately tap the F12 key and press it continuously.

4. Now you have the boot option. Select CD/DVD/ODD by pressing enter then continuously tap it until you see the Windows is loading a file.

5. Wait until it goes 100%.

6. Now it will ask you on what partition you will put the operating system. Just select the partition that has a large capacity or size.

7. Just wait until it completes the whole installation.

8. Restart the computer.

Hope it helps,

Thank you for using FixYa.

Instaling windows 7 in vaio laptop have vista orginal windows how solving the problem in instaling windows 7?

if your system came with vista originally the issue would be is you would need to know what version of vista you have on your system, the version makes the difference if you have vista home premium then your windows 7 should be a win7 Home premium as well, because if you are upgrading vista using your win7 disc and your windows version are different for example you have vista Home premium and your win7 is win7 ultimate and you do an upgrade the problem will be your product key,

but if you have a retail version of win7 and you are installing it on your laptop Vaio insert the disc in the DVD-drive win7 needs a DVD reader to be able to install win7 if you have a cd-rom it wont work, then turn the laptop off power it back up keep on tapping f12 it should bring you a boot menu, select ODD or which ever is your dvd drive then press enter then enter again if it says on the screen press any key to boot to CD, this should begin win7 installation on the screen saying windows is loading files the so on ans so fort ^_^ this will over write everything in vista but in win7 it will still create a windows.old folder from vista only from the my documents folder my picture and my music and my video and desktop Items but remember application icons will not work on win7 you may need to reinstall the program again for it to work on win7 and yeah make sure that you choose custom/advance in the selection screen do no select upgrade unless you vista and win7 are the same version eg. Vista Home premium / Win7 Home premium ^_^

Windows Failed to load because Kernel file is missing

try pressing f8 when you load vista and then select start normally
if that doest not work and gives you the same error then restart and press F12 as soon as you see the dell logo, put in the vista installation disk that you got with the laptop and select boot with disk option.

try and repair or the recovery option .
