There is usually a 125V, 20 AMP line fuse inside the microwave, mounted at the point where the power cord enters the back of the unit. Unfortunately, you will need to uninstall the oven (if this is an over the range model), UNPLUG it and remove the exterior case to access. The case comes off in various ways depending on manufacture and model. If the model number you listed this question under is correct, you have THREE possibilties that may cause a complete loss of power: 1. Line fuse 2. The Oven Cavity Thermostat. 3. Thermal Cut-Out (Thermostat) for the Magnetron. The line fuse is connected in line with the power cord inside the unit and is listed as part of item 28 under the "Interior and Ventilation" parts heading. The thermostat for the oven cavity is listed as item 29 (part number 8183703) under the same parts heading. The thermostat for the Magnetron is listed as item 15 under the "Magnetron and Turntable Parts" heading. The part number is 8183698.

I would recommend you check the fuse, first. This the easiest and least expensive repair. It is also the most common. If you managed to overheat the oven any time recently, you may want to check the thermostat(s) to see if it is still good, next. They should read 0 ohms when measured out of the circuit across the terminals.

If the line fuse is blown, you can usually purchase a box of fuses at a hardware store for just a little more than what the manufacturer charges for a single fuse. 125V, 20AMP Ceramic Slow Blow fuses are recommended.

If you have any questions, or need additional assistance troubleshooting, please post back and let me know. I hope you find this information helpful. NOTE: Baked potatoes, steamed vegetables and popcorn are notrious for causing high humidity and/or overheat conditions in an oven cavity. If you find any of the thermostats tripped or blown, remember to allow the oven cavity to cool by leaving the door open between cooking items. This should only take a few minutes. Repeatedly heating items one after the other can cause high humidity and heat which may cause the thermostats to trip. Some of these thermostats reset themselves, others you need to replace.

NOTE: Make sure you take any resistance readings with the microwave UNPLUGGED and the component under test isolated (removed) from the circuit. These ovens can blow a fuse by simply sitting idle. This can occur from any power fluctuations, brown outs, voltage spikes, etc. Or, it could be the symptom of a component that may have failed. If you find the internal fuse blown and replace it, only to have it blow again, you have a more significant problem than a simple blown fuse.

Inside the oven. There are usually 3 fuses. 2 are on the board, while one is on a wire enclosed in a plastic twist to open capsule. The fuses in a microwave oven is a little bit specialized. Be sure to get the proper replacement part.

This could be a lot of things. IT might be a capacitor or diode. MY money is on the capacitor. Since it works for a minute before it quits.

Assuming your power line voltage is okay, it would not surprise me that after 27 years, your high voltage capacitor is drying out and increasing its capacitance. This will cause variance in the high voltage output, which can stress the magnetron and increase current consumption.

Hi, there are three issues that will cause a no heat situation in a microwave. these issue are a failed Magnetron, busted cut-off fuse and, failed diode.

I recommend checking all these area that are located inside the microwave for faults.

The most common issue will be a failed Magnetron.

The diode and, fuse will be located on the noise filter assembly.

No display, no light, no fan, microwave dead!

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

It may be the fuse, which is located in the upper area behind the control panel.

If the fuse is good, it may be an open thermostat or thermal cutout (TCO) / thermal fuse on or near the magnetron or on top of the cavity / body of the oven.

(Don't be confused by the base or hood thermostat, which is on the floor of the chassis. It will read normally open).

The fuse and magnetron thermostat can be checked with out taking the oven down from the wall, but if you need to check the oven thermostat, you will need to pull it from the wall.

To help with that, you can download Whirlpool owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

If you think the problem is on the control panel, we repair these nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in most cases.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your full model number) for more information & help.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Fuse keeps blowing.

couple questions -
what else is on the circuit,
and what current does the oven need

there are whirlpool over-range models with
1200watts of microwave,
1500watts of convection power, a
60watt bulb and a
375watt fan

over 15amps -20amp circuit needed

if you inadvertantly replaced a higher current fuse with a 15amp fuse, it will blow every time.
the install guide http://www.whirlpool.com/assets/pdfs/product/ZINSTALL/8206589.pdf reccommends 20amp
not a solution, something to check,

It should be pretty straightforward to replace. You need to be sure the oven is unplugged.

It's easier to remove the wires while it's still screwed onto the oven. There may be locking tabs on the terminals, so don't force them! Pliers will help, but be gentle.

When you gets the wires off, unscrew the old one, put the new one on, and tighten the screws, then reinstall the wires.

My Whirlpool MH3184xps is shooting a spark when in use with the rack. When the rack is removed the oven works fine. I am guessing that some of the coating on the rack has cracked and peeled and is exposing some aluminum. Has anyone else had this problem?
