Question about Dell Inspiron B120 Notebook

Hook up a monitor to my laptop

I am trying to hook up a external monitor to my laptop. What happens is the picture is located to the left side and very low on the monitor. Only about 1/3 of the picture is seen. I cannot adjust the monitor enough to center the picture. I cannot find a fix in Windows XP. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You didn't configured it properly.
First you need to clear the wrong settings: unhook the monitor and reboot. Now run a system cleaner like CCleaner. When this is done reboot again and go to Start / Control Panel / Display / Settings - in there you should see only one monitor, make sure that the correct resolution (1280 x 800) is selected.
Now shut down the laptop and connect the new monitor using the VGA cable. Start the laptop and go back to Settings - now you will see 2 monitors, the second one being the new one. Click on it and select the second greatest resolution your monitor can support (the native one if it's an LCD). Tick the Extend... option and click Apply, then Keep then OK. That is all
BTW if the wallpaper that you have set on the laptop isn't the same dimensions as the new monitor the image might look funny. Just to be sure the entire screen of the new monitor is used move the cursor around and you will see its real dimensions.

I did as you suggested and I got the desktop up on the external monitor, But there are no icons and none of the programs show up on the monitor. They are on the laptop screen and operate normally.

I can toggle back and forth on laptop to switch between laptop or monitor or both screens, but nothing shows up on monitor. ?????

That is normal behaviour, the screen on the laptop is your main one and the other monitor is another one attached to it to give it some more free space. If you want to see something on it all you have to do is to drag what ever you want on it and drag it back when you're done.

If you want to use the new monitor as the main one you can do that by simply ticking and unticking the corresponding option from the Settings, but disconnecting the laptop  with the new monitor set as the main one will result in totally messed out settings and serious problems on the laptop display.

I can drag a icon to external monitor but when I click on it, it opens on the laptop[. If I open it on the laptop and drag it to monitor it onlyshows on monitor, not both. The settings tab shows laptop as the primary display, but when I try to toggle the display on the laptop between laptop or monitor or both, it always comes up on the monitor. I would like to have programs displayed on both

    Thanks for your help

So what you want is a Clone setup. To activate Dual Display Clone mode you must open the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for Mobile settings manager and select this mode.

Go to Start / Control Panel / Display/  Settings / Advanced / Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for Mobile / Graphics Properties and there you will find it.

The left half of the screen works just fine but the right side is completely white.

You most likely need your LCD panel replaced, but to be 100% sure, you need to hook your laptop up to an external monitor. If you get a good picture on the external monitor, then the LCD panel is bad!

Desktop wont stay on screen drops to white screen blank

First thing you should try is hooking the laptop up to external monitor. It's usually easier to hook everything up, THEN power on the laptop. Most laptops will detect the external monitor and automatically provide video, some models require pressing FN+F5 Just examine your laptop keyboard carefully for a pair of icons that looks like two monitors.

If you get external video then more than likely the lcd on your laptop will need to be swapped out. If you don't get any video it could be a GPU or memory issue.

let me know what happens and I can guide you along.

I want to use a NEC Multisync 1700V monitor as an external display for my Thinkpad T400. However I get no image when I hook up the laptop and change the display scheme to display on my laptop screen +...

The only I can think of is the resolution setting that your T400 is putting out that your NEC does not like andcannot display, look at the T42 resolution when the NEC is hooked up to it and try to set it to be the same in the T400.

Turns on no pic tried to hook up a monitor to it

Thank you for your query

When hooking up a external monitor please ensure you press the fn key and one of the F keys that has a picture of the 2 monitors on top, this will swap the picture from the laptop monitor to your external monitr

If the above works then the fault resides on your laptop monitor screen, it may be that the riboon cable/ lcd screen or the inverter have gone.

if the above doesnt work then it may be the onboard vga on the graphics card that will need replacing

If this has been useful please leave positive feedback/vote/testimonial as

this will help me greatly - Thank you again

Can't connect to external monitor or to Sony bravia tv. When vga connected nothing happens at all on laptop but external monitor says " check cable" ( have tried another cable ). If connected in power off...

You need to:

- Connect everything with the laptop turned off
- Boot the laptop
- Use the Fn key plus F8 or F9 (I'm trying from a small picture of the keyboard!) to cycle through the external display options.
