Hello.

This may not what you want to hear, but you may need to purchase a legal copy of Windows XP Pro to use with this system. You said that you have Windows XP Home. If you have a licensed copy of Windows XP Home (not an OEM copy designed for use with a certain system that you owned), you may be able to reinstall Windows XP Home.

Apparently, the person who sold you the computer, did not have a valid copy of the Windows XP operating system. The person who sold it to you knew that the copy was not legal.

What are the details of your purchase - did you buy it without checking it ? Did you buy it used from a store ? If so, can you return it ? Do you have a receipt and a cancelled check ?

Hope this helps.

Here's one from left field,

Download this photo app. It on all new customer's software builds.

After that, yes, there is an XP Mode available for free download to users of W7 Pro, Ultimate or Enterprise and would run your previous more "friendly" version.

Rpc server is unavailable

This problem occurs because of a mismatch in the computer name and the name that the RPC service expects. This mismatch may occur if the computer name is changed by using one of the following methods:
  • The Microsoft System Preparation (Sysprep) tool was used to create the Windows XP image that you used to start the computer.
  • You change the computer name during the Windows XP Out of Box Experience.
  • One or more of the following conditions are true:
    • You disconnect the network cable during the Windows XP Out of Box Experience.
    • You do not restart the computer after the Windows XP Out of Box Experience has completed.
    • You open Disk Management.
To work around this problem, restart the computer at least one time after the Windows XP Out of Box Experience has completed, and before you open Disk Management
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.Microsoft is researching this problem and will post more information in this article when the information becomes available.

Windows Vista home + Windows XP Professional Networking issue

Make sure domain settings to your server are correct on the notebook computer. These settings are located in the control panel of the system setting.

Whats the operating system of your server?

Make sure the firewall in windows security is turned off too. Sometimes that thing sneaks up on you.

I haven't used the home edition of Vista but another reason why it might not be working is because it isn't the business version. Microsoft might have added extra security to prevent the home version from connecting to a server. I know we use the business version of Vista at work and it is working that way on the intranet server without a problem.

I would check with Microsofts website on that.

Windows XP Pro installed but computer boots to Home Edition

It sure is possible.
I would take it back to them and demand that WINXP Pro is put back in there and it boot correctly
They saved about 50 bucks putting in WINXP Home.

Sounds like a bunch of rookies trying to pull a fast one.
