SOURCE: john deere 2010 tractor. pto grinds and wont engage

The PTO usually has a clutch that has to be engaged so that you can select the PTO rotation setting. I had a problem like that on my tractor and all it needed was a little adjustment on the PTO clutch lever, so it could disengage the PTO gearbox properly.

SOURCE: Engine dies when engaging PTO switch on a John

Check and adjust your RIO switch{reverse implement option}near the trans if so equipped. What happens when you press forward pedal then engage blades?Would also check the lower bearing on your pto clutch to see if its seized up.

The electro-magnetic coil side of your PTO is shorted out.On the 318 it is very easy to replace, just under front screen.

F525. Updated mower switch by John Deere is not engaging mower

The John Deere F525, a front cutting machine, has 3 fuses.
20 Amp
15 Amp
10 Amp

Check the 15 amp fuse. I believe this supports the PTO clutch. If you replace the fuse and it blows again, check the electric clutch. You will likely find burnt or melted wires. The bearings do go out on these clutches causing them to run hot and eventually burn up.

PTO Clutch will not engage: There is a very fine one page discussion on evaluating electric clutches at this site:

http://www.messicks.com/Articles/FixingElectricClutch.aspx

My JD tech manual, which covers the entire LA 100 series, agrees with the electrical specifications. It states that the Electric PTO Clutch should show the following:

Resistance 3.7 ohms
Current Draw 3.25 amps
It does not give the air gap.

It does include a note to check the PTO Clutch Key for damage or if missing. So there is a drive key between the PTO Clutch and the shaft. Additionally, it recommends checking the tightness of the cap screw. That's the screw or bolt that holds the clutch on the shaft.
Cap Screw torque 55 lb-ft (75 N.m).

If the fuse blows, I recommend you check the resistance of the clutch. If the clutch is shorting to ground it will show zero resistance when you ohms the connector wire to a ground position. In which case, you will have to replace the clutch.

Fixing Electric Clutches

Other possibilities.
On the F525 there is a cut-off switch in the hydraulic system. It is a low pressure cut off. If you were running the mower and deck and then it suddenly stopped, it may be low pressure in the hydraulics. It will not automatically reset as you are using the same volume for the drive pumps. Once the oil gets low enough it cuts out the deck drive 1st, then the drive pumps.

John Deere 265 replaced pto switch on dash pto drive belt and mower deck belt still pto does not engage...also randomly blows 20 amp fuse from time to time when pto would engage previously...checked...

The electrical is part of the PTO clutch assembly. It should only draw 5-7 amps. Ohm reading is somewhere between 1.7 to 2.5 ohms.

These coils do short from anywhere from a partial short to completely.

X595 john deere pto wont kick in

These John Deere Garden Tractors have a RIO (Reverse Implement Option) on the PTO. If your PTO is engaged and you back up, the PTO will automatically stop. To reset it, depress your PTO engagement switch to the OFF position. Take your foot off the reverse pedal. Pull up on the PTO engagement switch. The PTO should restart. To use the RIO feature, pull up on the PTO switch for a second or two just before you step on the reverse hydrostatic pedal. The yellow RIO indicator light should come on your dashboard and you can now back up with the PTO still running. Works great for snow blowing when I don't want to keep resetting my electric PTO clutch to keep restarting my snow blower.

If your PTO will not restart, you may have a PTO switch starting to fail, or a likely logic problem in your electric PTO control module, or one of your forward/reverse indicator switches, which is linked to your PTO control module along with the overtemp circuit, is stuck/faulty.

John Deere LX173 pto will not engage. Wet recently

Probably the pto switch. Find the 2 wire 'T' plug from the PTO clutch and disconnect. With a voltmeter across the the 2 spades on the tractor side of the plug you should get 12 volts DC with the PTO switch on ( you may need to sit in the seat ). If you get 12 volts at the plug its probably the PTO clutch. If no power then its a fuse or the PTO switch

Finding reason for blowing fuses

is it doing it when the PTO is engaged, if so then you will need to find out if the PTO is seized. If it is just blowing fuses then more then likely a pinched wire. Hope this helps Tim
