Locate the exhaust manifold, there will be 8 bolts attaching it to the engine block. Remove these bolts, they may need penetrating fluid to loosen them. Slide the manifold off the exhaust studs.

Remove the gaskets, scrub where they have been with a wire brush and refit new ones. Use some gasket sealant to affix them and replace the manifold. Start at the middle studs and work outwards in a criss-cross formation.

Torque up the studs to the correct settings (check the manual) and don't overdo it as you could crack the cylinder head (been there done that).

Start the motor and check for any leaks around the manifold, if so, check gaskets again for a good seal then try again.

Hope this helps and please vote for me :)

My 1985 4-winns mercruiser 4 cylinder boat runs great for twenty minutes to a half hour then the motor misses and stalls out. After about thirty minutes the boat starts back up and runs great for anot

Check the torque on the head bolts. I can't tell you what it is, been a long time. If they are good, run it till it dies. Then check for spark at the plugs or coil/s. No spark replace the coil/s. My guess would be coils. But I have seen the head loosen up.

Getting water in pistons and of course oil.Is it

There are Flapper plates in the exhaust. They can burn out especially when running with the Muffs for winterizing. Then problems shows up first time you take it out. Usually this problem does not show while boat is moving. The bad flapper allows water to draw up into the engine like having a straw in a drink.
Sometimes when decellerating or Transom to the waves a rush of water goes past failed Flapper and into engine. Instant Hydro lock.

Its easier to change the Flapper than removing a head and you know which exhaust to target. When you get the Flapper out, the parts guys can easily tell you if its junk.

When we put boat in reverse in makes a banging noise.

If its a mercruiser 3.0 liter 4 cylinder motor, they are an old block design and will give a pretty healthy clunk when dropped into reverse. Especially if you are shifting from forward to reverse without stopping. Let the throttle hang in neutral for a minute before shifting into reverse.
