HELP - I'm in the middle of a big project! There is a vertical streak and/or slight smear in the text in my black-and-white and also color copies, about three inches from the left side of the paper. It is an HP Officejet 7310, 4+ years old. I just replace the tri-color and black cartridges. I did "Clean Print Cartridges" to no avail. I'm not too tech savvy - any advice??

Hi,
You wrote that you did “clean print cartridges”.

If you run back to back cleaning cycles, It just makes things worse! Give the cartridge a chance to let some ink flow in between cleaning cycles. After running a cleaning cycle, Print 3 or 4 pages of a color pattern or a color balanced image. If the printing is still not looking good, run another cleaning cycle, then 3 or 4 pages of color pattern. Repeat the process until you have obtained a quality print. This will purge air bubbles or foamy ink that a cleaning cycle may not get.

Hope this helps.

I did this and it didn't make any difference. Same vertical smear, one letter each line, about three inches from the left page border. Very frustrating... text is still readable but smeared in the one spot all the way down the page.

    Hi,

You say that there is a problem on the left side of the page. Please check step 5 on this link.

This may be helpful. Only one of the cartridge may cause problem and you may detect as described in step 5.

    Hope this helps.

Hi you should check to see if your printer has a damage printhead or the feeder may be dirty you should clean it then try printing a test page.

The smear is most likely something that needs cleaned inside the printer or along the rollers. The whole machine is going to need to be cleaned . It most likely is in the outer rollers after the print process. If your not comfortable opening this printer up and taking parts out on your own I would have it cleaned by a service center.

I'm pretty good with tools, just not computer programs. What can I try as a first pass to repair it? And what will it cost to have it repaired -- would it be easier and not much more expensive to get a new one?

  • James Young Jul 12, 2010

Depending on how much one cost it could be better to buy a new one. Depends on what you service center is going to charge you to clean up the printer versus what it cost for a new one. Your problem is most likely just after the paper moves past the print process. Since it is a continuous smear or line it is something stuck in the rollers or base of the print head with ink on it that is making the mark on your paper.

Hi,

Thanks for writing to Fixya.com.

I understand that some printer companies now manufacture inkjet printers that have one black ink cartridge that contains non-smear ink—waterproof. The best way to beat this problem is to use pigment-based black ink and also to give the page more time to dry after being printed. See below for specific details from each vendor. HP Advanced Paper is specially formulated to retain ink color near the surface while allowing the liquid carrying the inks to penetrate into the paper. This results in much faster drying, so you can handle printouts sooner with less risk of smearing. Additionally, you'll prevent streaking from water splashes. Most retailers offer HP Advanced Paper at the same price as other HP printing papers.
Thank you for contacting Fixya and please accept the solution if it has helped you.

I bought some cheap toner and noticed almost immediately streaking and missing lines. I replaced it with HP toner but now black won't print at all.

If your printouts are streaked or faded, missing black or other colors, have blurred or fuzzy text, or ink streaks or smears, or show other problems, please refer to the link below for troubleshooting steps for print quality issues.

Dell 948 printer. Black(2 inch) Vertical lines when I print

You need to check the glass for any white-out or other smears that don't belong, if the glass is clean then the scan assembly has elements that are burned out which will cause dark streaks.

Hp Photosmart c5280 1/ 2inch thick black line

There is something on your scanner glass. Clean the glass with glass cleaner. If this happens when using the automatic document feeder, open the top side cover where the paper feeds into. There is a narrow glass strip there. Clean that as well.

If this fails, the scanner head has a bad sector on the CCD and will need to be replaced. You will probably find that it will be cheaper to replace the printer entirely if that is the case.

HP Officejet 6300 All-in-one machine makes black streaks

The problem is that that there a small piece of glass that the doc feeder use's to scan the orginal. You will have to clean the small glass it's about a half of a inch piece and is normally under the doc feeder unit. It will either be to the right side of the main copy board glass or it is under the doc feed unit where the paper goes down through the feeder. It is mostly some white out on the glass, just clean with a dam cloth with water or windex..... Good Luck

use the advanced options page and reset the factor blue and red convergence defaults then do re apply the auto color defaults color at first it seemed very red (which is good because red was the missing factor in the green picture) but after reseting all the color and tints to the normal ranges I then reset the color auto correct again and all seems fine.

2 IN. GRAY AREA DOWN SIDE PAPER

There are several things that can cause this. A worn toner cartridge and/or transfer roller can cause vertical smears, but it may also be a worn fuser assembly. The teflon coating on the fixing (heat) roller wears off, and leaves vertical streaks of varying widths on the pages. Sometimes you may see "ghost" images on the pages for the same reason. Open the back door of the printer, and hold down the exit guide on the fuser (carefull, it may be very hot). There are two long rollers, the lower one is black, the upper roller is either grey or shiny brown. That's the teflon coating. See if it's peeled or damaged. If so, replace the fuser assembly.
