Question about Plumbing

1 Answer

I just bought a PRO45series Fluidmaster to replace a fill valve. in a 1958 American Standard, builder installed, tank type flush toilet. There were no installation instructions in the package to calibrate the unit. I am a Missouri State Registered Mechanical Engineer and purchased the equipment from Soulard Plumbing Supply. The unit should be boldly labeled to not use chlorine cleaners. Your casting label is obscure. T. O. Menary: E-mail: tomenary@Gmail.com

The installation instructions are usually printed inside the package. Open the box fully (saves paper) Here is a link to the instructions: https://aruntx.com/conference/kit.pdf
When you say to calibrate the unit, I'm assuming you're referring to adjusting the water level? You can do this by either adjusting the height or the float water level adjustment or both. These are quality trouble free units, I've never had any problems with fluidmaster products. There is a large warning on using Chlorine cleaners (inside the tank) in the instructions. Chlorine cleaners in the bowl are no problem. I've used the tablet type in the tank though without any problem. There would be a problem if the toilet was not used regularly and the tablet continued to dissolve, causing the chlorine level to rise dramatically.

What causes a loud gurgle after flush?

If the flapper does not seat correctly and completely, refill water flows into the bowl and causes a "false flush" and the loud gurgle. You can demonstrate this by holding the flush handle depressed after a normal flush. Also, there may not be sufficient slack in the flapper chain to allow it to seat correctly.

If the flush valves were installed exactly according to the instructions, they should work perfectly and can be excluded as a source of the problem.

Install flush valve

Drain the tank (turn off the water supply and hold the flush valve open with your hand).

Remove the old flush valve. Replace it with a new one. Turn the water supply back on.

My brand new toilet american standard round front model cadet 3 tank not fill water

If you verify that the water supply to the toilet is turned on, push down the float on the flush valve. Water should start flowing. If it doesn't, something (such as debris) may be blocking the valve and preventing filling. The new valve could be defective - permanently closed.

The overflow pipe should be attached to a small clip that holds it in position over the over flow pipe. If it is loose or attached to the outside it will do what yours is doing.

Just installed the cadet 3 and here is what is happening. First let me say that the toilet it replaced was working good. The water filled very slow and the bowl would not fill much. I messed with the...

The amount of water in any toilet bowl is determined by its construction and no tank adjustment will ever change that. American Standard has a history of having small water surface areas in their low or ultra low flush toilets. Take a large container of water and pour directly into the bowl. If the ending level remains the same, then that is the manufactured level for your toilet.

Not all tanks completely discharge all of the water when flushed. Measure 1.5 gallons of water into a container. Turn off your water supply to the toilet then flush normally. Replace the water in the tank with your premeasured amount and observe this new water level. You might be surprised to find it is at the same level it always is. Since water weighs more than 8 pounds per gallon, one concept used in todays toilets is to have more than 1.5 gallons of water in the tank and use the extra weight push the water past the flapper at a faster rate while designing the flapper to drop after only 1.5 gallons have passed through.

A working toilet all of a sudden won't fill back up. When I pour water into the tank, it will flush, but it doesn't refill.

Hi,
There could be a couple of things you need to check.
First turn the water off at the valve right under the left side of the toilet. Then take off the hose at the big nut right up under the left side of the toilet. Check to make sure that there is no dirt pligging the hole going into the toilet. Also open the valve and make sure that water runs into a bucket of pan from the hose.
If everything seems fine there then the fill valve will need to be replaced.
A Fluidmaster 400A or equivalent fill valve will be a universal replacement that will fit your toilet.

I hope that this will help you to solve your problem!

Thanks for using Fixya!!

My American Standard toilet flushes okay but when it is filling up the water will not stop running unless I lift the top and depress the lever.

Replace the fill valve. You can pick one up[ at Home dep or Lowes for about 20 buks. Close your angle stop at wall behind toilet. Drain all water from tank then remove supply loine from under tank. Then unscrew fill valve and remove gasket and all. Remember to put gasket in new one. :)

is the flapper weighted? if it is it will cause it to shut prematurely. one thing you can do is increase the water in the tank. you might have to buy a pvc cuppler to put on the over flow to allow it to fill up more. korky makes a nice flapper thats not weighted
