I would take it back, what did they say they did to correct the issue?

  • lloyd_pate Jul 12, 2010

Repair order reads: "System was getting BSOD STOP 0x7e. Did a repair on Windows to correct issue"

NOTE; I did take it back - but for another problem - worms. In addition to removing the worms, they also removed some other vital stuff - like sound - and hibernation, others. At that point I kind of lost confidence in their ability.

    Thanks for your help.

Can you run a Hard Drive Diagnostic on this machine? can you get into the command prompt at all?

  • lloyd_pate Jul 13, 2010

No to both questions. When I turn the computer on I get a dark page with startup instructions: to wit:

    safe Mode
    Safe Mode with Networking
    Safe Mode with Command prompt
    Last known good configuration
    Start Windows normally

Regardless of which is selected, the next I see is the WindowsXP logo in color which stays for a few seconds then back to the instructions above.

No to both questions. When I turn the machine on all I get is a dark screen with white writing listing several options to restart windows - none of which work. Suggestions?

Do you have your Operating System CD? If you do you can try re-installing windows; get into the recovery console; etc. Are you familiar with performing any of this?

Thanks for the "technical" assistance. LP

Hi, this could be more serious than the computer shop thought! It could well be a failing hard drive, difficult to be sure without seeing it. I would take it back to the same computer shop, as they would hopefully only charge you for parts this time. Hope this helps

Boot manager is missing HP pavilion dv6 notebook windows 7

This sounds like a common issue. The boot manager file "NTLDR" Can become corrupt or go missing due to a few situations.
1) Shut down improperly
2) Virus
3) Bad hard disk
4) Windows being windows.
Too fix this simply use a windows 7 cd and boot from it.
Choose the Repair option and let it do its thing. If i recall there's also a repair startup option you can use aswell.
Windows repair usually fixes the problem but if that doesnt work you can also put the hard disk into another computer and copy over replacement boot loader files.
  • ntldr, the main boot loader itself
  • NTDETECT.COM, required for booting an NT-based OS, detects basic hardware information needed for successful boot
  • ""
Try that. The windows repair usually works but if you have to use the alternative and it doesnt work it could be your MBR. Windows repair also fixes this but theres an old command you can run from the dos shell of the cdrom "mbrfix or fixmbr" That will take care of it.
    Good Luck :)

My pc turns on but windows does not open

Computer does not boot up The problem maybe the RAM, it is faulty or just needs reseating to make proper electrical contact.
Reseat the RAM and then boot up your laptop. If it still does not boot up then remove the RAM module/s and take them to your friendly computer repair shop and get them to test the RAM for you. Just like you sometimes need a mechanic to repair your car, sometimes you do need a technician to diagnose and identify the fault or faults on your computer. Not only does a good service technican have the experience to deal with this type of problem, they also have the equipment that allows them to look at things the average computer user can't see, and he has a collection of replacement parts that can be used to quickly test individual components on your computer.

    Screen freezes

are you installed the some kind of software before freeze?, i mean, when you use it, you install the another application. if you do, then perhaps that application caused the problem. if not, then the problem is in the hardware driver. freeze problem mostly caused by unstable driver or software. make sure driver or software that you are installed into your operating system is stable or compatible.
