My roommates laptop is connecting to the internet, mine won't

My roommates laptop is connecting to the internet just fine. Mine will not connect. When I try to connect, it asks for the wireless key. I enter it (10 characters), but the next time I pullit up, it has reverted to a key with less characters. And, it still does not connect.

Sometimes the key length would change for security purposes. What you have to make sure is that you are entering the correct network key.
Use a connected computer like your roommates laptop or hardwired connect you laptop to the router using an ethernet cable to access the setup page of the router.

In your browser's address bar, type 192.168.1.1. By default, leave the username blank, password is admin.
Go to Wireless -> Wireless security.
You will see the network key. Just copy that and enter it on your laptop.
I hope this helps!

I have HP Pavilion Entertainment PC and I'm currently connected to the internet via a wirelss router. My roommates are also connected to the same router and they have not had any issues with...

Try positioning your computer next to the router - or within line of sight of the router - see if the limited connectivity thing comes up. It probably won't. Then try placing your laptop at the same spot where your roommate(s) normally uses his or hers or their computers and see if that makes any difference.

Wireless signals can go thru walls, or bounce off of anything that it can't go thru - so we're all trying to catch a good bounce and hence, location matters a lot. Sometimes moving a wireless router can make a huge difference - like moving it from behind the TV to above the TV for better broadcasting (cause the signal ain't gonna go thru a TV's power supply). Anyway, that'd be how I'd go about troubleshooting this issue....

Broken wireless!

Your problem may be that you have windows trying to find the connections and your wi-fi utility also competing for the same connection. On the notification icon at the bottom right of your screen right click on it and go to Open Utility, there should be some check boxes that allow you to have the utility manage your wireless connection and to enable the radio. Check all that are applicable. Close the utility and go to Network Connections. Your 1394 Net Adapter may not be configured right, Right click on it and hit Repair, if Windows can repair the connection it will do it for you. Otherwise you may have to uninstall and reinstall the wireless utility and allow it to be the primary utility that manages your network connections. Hope this helped and good luck.
