That is correct. Auto mode is exactly what the name says. The camera automatically decides whether to use the flash or not.

If you need to use the flash, switch to one of the non-auto exposure modes, such as P.

Flash on my Nikon D40x digital camers not working.

First look at you mode dial on the camera and make sure it is not on the setting with a picture of a flash with a cross through it. If that doesn't work in your menu see if the flash is disabled. Note: When On A Manual Mode You Need To Manually Pop Up The Flash

If the camera is in auto mode, the flash opens anytime the camera feels that it cannot take the picture with only ambient light. You can overcome this by closing the flash once the camera opens it or using a manual mode. In manual mode, the flash opens only if you press the flash button on the left side of the flash housing.

I HAVE A NIKON D40X.I CANNOT GET THE BUILT IN FLASH TO WORK.IT IS IN AUTO MODE AND FLASH IS TURNED ON.IF I ATATCH AN EXTERIA FLASH IT FIRES EVERY TIME.I HAVE TRIED IT ON ALL THE OTHER MODES,IT DID FIRE...

In Auto mode the flash will only fire when the camera thinks it needs it.

Only in the PASM modes do you get to decide whether to use the flash or not.

Flash not automatically opening up.

Check the flash setting in the shooting mode (on Auto). Press the "?" button twice. You should see the flash mode window. Small box on the lower left for flash settings (hi-lighted in yellow, or navigate to it). Press OK to see and change flash settings to your preference.

May I use a Soligor 24D Flash on my new Nikon D40X Digital Camera

You can purchase an off-camera flash sync adaptor at any good camera store, complete with extension cable.   The should work fine.

Nikon D40X inbuilt flash

If it's withing 30 days, get it exchanged. I have a D70s and it's been working fine for me, maybe something with the D40x with other customers? Take it back to the store and let an "instructor" try it out to make sure it's not a setting.

It's great for the manufacturer to know about any problems so they can get a good sample of problems to help many people. Good luck.
