Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

My husband unplugged my router from the DSL box. I have been messing around with it but don't remember how to add my router. I know it sounds simple but I'm lost. I fixed the connection to the DSL box so I get internet connection to my desk top but I can't connect to my laptop.

Most router normally have one or two WAN connection port and one LAN connection port.

if you are connecting your desktop with the available LAN port then you need a hub or switch to create multiple connection .

alternatively if your router have two LAN port make sure you are using the right ip address and the proper gateway address(from your isp)

Did this connection ever work before? I have a similar setup with Iristel and once in a while it goes down (Hurricane Leslie generated the problem last week).

Check whether the setup works without the Vonage device. This will tell you whether the problem is with your router or the Vonage box. If it works without the Vonage, the problem is in the Vonage box, you may find a good time to call Vonage for support.

I don't know whether the Vonage box (in my Iristel case it's a mediatrix 2 something) has to 'call home' before it lets your router set itself up.

If your router does not work without the Vonage, you have a simpler problem, the router is the issue. You can reconnect the Vonage and if the phones work, this confirms that the router is the problem. At least you can use the phones.

With the router, you need to log in to the admin screens and poke around until you find the problem. It is always a good idea to only change one thing at a time and always remember what changed immediately before the problem was noticed.

Can security issues (firewalls)block internet connection? I couldn't connect and when I turned off my firewall, it worked. However I cannot keep my frewall turned off

Yes it can stop your internet.
First you need to know what program seems to be blocked, for instance, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, Etc...
Then you need to gain access to your firewall and check to see if there is an exception for that program, and if there isn't, create one.
If your using the built in firewall that comes with windows, you can find the controls for that under the start button, and control panel.
If your using a software firewall, then you will have to work your way around inside the menu system to add the program as an exception.
If you have a literal hardware firewall (a literal box in your homeoffice for instance) or a router from your internet provider, such as cable or dsl, you will have to find the access port and change it.
Access to the port is gained through the browser, and usually is at a port from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.100, but can be anywhere from 1 to 255.
192.168.1.1 and 1.100 are the 2 most used ports for access.
If there is a password and you don't know it:
If it is your hardware, and not the cable companies or the dsl isp's then you will have to reset it, there is usually a spot on the back (but it can be anywhere) that you push in with a pen and this resets it.
Usually the reset process is done by holding the button in for about 5 seconds, and then while doing this, turning off the unit, sometimes by pulling the power plug out of the back.
If the router or dsl modem is not your hardware:
If this is the case, you should contact your internet provider.
There can be settings that are unique to your isp (internet service provider) and resetting the hardware could render the hardware non functional.

I am not getting a signal on my laptop with the netgear box. the model # is wgr614. I am hard wired into my modem now. I couldn't remember my security password so I pushed the reset button on the back. ...

When you press the reset button on your router, you essentially erase all of the settings back to factory defaults. You will have to set up your router as if youre connecting it for the first time. You need the default gateway IP address (this is needed to directly access the router itself), and information based on your internet connection type (cable modem or DSL). If you use a DSL modem, you may need your username and password (this should have been provided for you when you got your service; call your provider's customer service if you dont have it). The setup CD that came with your router can (and most times will) help you with setting up your router. Newer setup CDs do most of the work for you. Follow the CDs instructions and refer to the owners manual for more info.

Reboot your computer,

Check your cables in machine especially the one that looks like an oversized phone cord. (cat5). Unplug replug.

If you have cable modem power down along with any wireless router power cable modem up first wait 30 seconds to 1 minutes. Then power router on

If it is dsl just unplug and replug the dsl modem and any attached routers plug in dsl modem first then plug in router if applicable.

If your at work try

First never post your user login info anywhere on the net that is not secure. A good hacker can always back track your connection and then they have access to your network and your personal files stored on your PC. So.. that being said when we get the problem solved, please be sure you CHANGE your Username AND Password on the router.

If you can't get logged in, my first question is are you on a Wireless Network? If you are, and you can, please make sure you are on a direct wired connection if possible.
On your router you will have a small hole that should have the word RESET around it. Usually near the power plug, on on the front near the lights. Take a paper clip and CAREFULLY push it into the hole. You will feel the resistance and the router will power off and back on.
This will put your router back to the factory default settings that it came with. If this is your presonal router use the manual you got with it for the user name and login. Usually ADMIN and Password, but can be different depending on the brand.
If this router came from the DSL Company and you are directly connected to it, then you should not have to do anything but reboot your PC.
Please let me know if this solves your problem. Thanks//Don

Lexmark x6150 unalbe to fax phone line is active using dsl

Hey Tony - Did you recently hook this up to the DSL for the first time? This unit is supposedly not able to work with a DSL line.

The fax modem in your AIO is an analog device and cannot be used on an ISDN, DSL, or PBX digital phone service. However, you can connect certain devices to your AIO that let you use the fax function in addition to these digital phone services.

To connect without an unsupported line:
Connect an active telephone cable from the AIO to the telephone wall jack.

To connect with an unsupported line:
If you use an ISDN phone service, you can connect to an analog telephone port (an R-interface port) on an ISDN terminal adapter.
For more help and to request an R-interface port, contact the ISDN provider.
If you use a DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) phone service, you can connect to a DSL filter or router that will allow for some analog (rather than digital) use.
If you use a PBX phone service, you can install an analog phone line for a fax machine.

If this was working on the DSL let me know. I don't know the location but obviously a separate phone jack is the easiest. Let me know. If this helps you fix it you can rate this as fixed. If you are just going to rate this as helpful I'd rather you please not rate it and just add a comment and say thanks for the info.
If you need more help just add a comment and I'll be glad to assist you further. Thanks.

Jeff
