Question about Toshiba NB205-N310/BN Netbook

1 Answer

Hello My nb205-n310 works perfectly until you put it into hibernation or turn it off. Then it won't boot up for a while, then, boots back up randomly to full usage. It is not battery or charger. short of a new motherboard, which costs more than the unit itself new, is there any step to do? other than never turning it off, could it be a power setting?

I'm assuming you have all the drivers installed and properly configured.
Yes, it appears that a part doesn't start up as it should. Run this program

and check the voltages, if one is low then the board is failing.

My laptop gets hot and quits and will not boot up. Is it the fan?

Either that or the air intake ports and the radiator are clogged by dust and dirt. Try to clean them with a vacuum positioned at the intake port - the one the air is sucked in by the fan.

NB205 is stuck in hibernation mode. Tried taking out battery, pressing power button for 10 seconds, unplugging, hooking it up to external monitor, etc. If I can just get it to turn on 1 more time so I can...

Remove the battery and disconnect the power unit. Remove the hard drive and RAM.
Power the netbook up. It should complain that the RAM is too low and the drive is missing.
Power it down and replace the drive and RAM.
That will get it going again.
If it doesn't, you have a mother board fault and need specilised help.

How to remove the motherboard on a Toshiba NB205-N310/BN netbook

The manual on the support page should tell you, but unless you have done this kind of thing before I would not try.
I have built a few pc's and repaired many pc's and laptops. and i would not want to try that.

My nb205-n210 reciently underwent an unexpected crash... now the netbook will not boot in any mode. When trying to boot up in any form of safe mode it freezes the boot at...

You will have to put a Windows DVD in and boot on that and do a "Repair" install, if that will not work, you will have to do a complete format and reinstall Windows.
But try the below first if you can.
1. Restart the computer.

2. Repeatedly tap the F8 key until you see the Advanced Boot Option Screen.

3. Select Repair Your Computerand hit Enter.

4. Select your country >> OK.

5. On the System Recovery Options Screen select Restore Application.

6. Follow the on-screen instructions.

8. When prompted, select on "Full Factory Recovery"

9. Select Next >> Yes.

10. After a couple of minutes the recovery will be completed.
Check to see if your PC will perform a Factory reinstall from a "Recovery partition" usually accessed via CTRL F10, or just F10 or F12 Check your manual, as if this is available it will restore your PC to a "From the factory state"
BTW, your hard drive may be ruined you may need to get a new one. Then reinstall Windows from DVD.

My nb205 seems to spike to 100% cpu usage often...how do i fix that?

Start shutting off things that are running in the background. Type msconfig in the run or search window from start depending on XP or Vista. Go to the tab that says "startup" You can disable all if you wish the only program needing to run when windows starts is your virus protection. I do not know which one you are running but Avast will be AWIL Maffee is something like Mafee agent and Norton may say Symnatec or just Norton. The newer versions of Norton may not even have a start prompt you can stop. Anything Windows needs to boot with will auto select on after reboot.
