You will most likely have to at least clean the carb too. A carb kit is not expensive and well worth the time. It has all the rubber parts that have been ruined. The little rubber gasket is actually a fuel pump and two check valves. The quite often get wrinkled way beyond use. Check both fuel supply and return lines to be sure they're not cracked and falling apart.

Mccullugh MCC1840 18" chainsaw. Gas pouring out bottom of saw. How do I get to the gas tank?

The fuel tank is part of the rear handle support body.
The fuel line to the carburetor goes into the top of the tank.
You will also find a return line from the air purge primer bulb. More than likely, one of these lines has broken or cracked. Gain access to some of the lines be removing the recoil assembly.
1) Remove the Air Filter and Filter Cover
(which you have already done)
2) Remove the recoil assembly to gain access to the primer lines.

Hi Anonymous, if your bike has been idle for months or years and does not want to start you will have to deal with a few remedies:
1. Drain and flush fuel tank, google " how to clean a motorcycle gas tank" find a couple forums to view the different options available.
2. Remove your air cleaner and clean and re-oil per Mfg. specifications.
3. Remove carburetor disassemble and decontaminate with a carb dip or if you have EFI remove injectors and clean with carb spray and compressed air
4. Remove fuel valve and filter disassemble and clean as necessary, remove fuel lines and replace with new ones.

Saw idles somewhat but bogs down and quits (no power) when using throttle

check fuel filter, fuel tank vent, air filter, main jets could be blocked, leak in the fuel line between carb and tank, diaphragms fatigued in carb.

Homelite c-51 wont start

I would first clean fuel tank with carb. Cleaner and compressed air then check all fuel lines as they will probably need replaced, clean all gunk from carb with carb. Cleaner and compressed air, check muffler for dirt dobber nest etc. and then start.

Will not start.

Check the chainsaws compression by putting your hand over the exhaust while slowly pulling on the string you should feel small bursts of air and feel resistance on the chain if not the cylinder most likely has lost compression and needs new piston rings.
Also, check that the spark plug is firing either with a spark plug tool (sold at many hardware stores or places like harbor freight). Or check it by removing it, connect it to the plug wire and touching the tip of the plug to a ground (the Finns on the cylinder or anything metal on the saw). Make sure you see a spark in between the two electrodes on the plug (do so in a dimly lit area as it can be hard to see). If there is no spark check the flywheel and magneto for any dirt or other material and clean it with a wire brush if there is no spark after cleaning the magneto, plug, and setting the plug you will need a new magneto.. Also make sure to check for dirt and carbon build up on the plug and use a gap tool and make sure the plug is set to the specs. on the manual (gap tool can be found at any hardware store) If you have cleaned the plug, properly set the gap, tested the spark, and have compression the problem is most likely a fuel delivery or fuel air mixture problem.
Make sure that the air filter is clean and free of any fuel/oil, moister, and dirt a dirty filter will foul operation.
Check the fuel tank for build up along with the fuel line and filter/strainer in the the tank if there is one. If you find alt of gum or particulates in the tank or line/filter clean them out with carburetter cleaner. You can also use starter fluid (sold at any hardware store) to clean the tank and lines and use it along with a clean tank/lines/carburetor. check the carburetor for build up by removing the bottom screw on it to inspect the bowl and carb float for residue. If you find thatr the carb bowl and float has particulates and other build up clean it with carb cleaner.
Also check the idle and running screws on the carb for proper adjustment the user manual will have the information to do so.

Have an old husky 40 probably about15-20 years old. Was running but stopped, could crank back up but when throttle was applied it stopped running. Inspected fuel pickup line to carb and it was broken...

On 2 cycle motors, the carb actually has a return line to the tank and this pressurizes the tank to bring the fuel into the carb. You may need to take the carb apart and chec the diaphram inside to make sure it's not cracked. This is what creates the pressure.
You should be able to purchase a carb rebuild kit from a local small engine repair shop. Also check your air filter and make sure it's cleaned and reoiled as needed. Change the spark plug as wel.. when they sit for long periods of time, they tend to not fire as well due to the chemicals it's exposed to.

I have this saw and really like it. Does the the primer seem to work? Most problems on these saws can be traced back to cracked fuel lines. Either tank to primer, primer to carb, or carb return back to tank. I would recommend it the saw it more than 3 years old to replace all the fuel lines. Total cost about $5. Buy your fuel line at Ace Hardware.

Chain saws are known for plugged/pinched fuel lines

Drain the fuel tank
Remove the fuel line from the carb.
Blow air back in to the tank
Rinse out the tank
Repeat several times
Make sure your gas cap is clean and the vent in the cap is not plugged.
Make sure your air filter is clean
Refill with clean gas mix from a clean gas can
It should run for you
Let me know if this does not solve your troubles

Stihl 021 running poorly

Couple of things I would check first. Place a funnel in a can with a paper napkin covering bottom of funnel. Pour the gas from the saw into the funnel. If there is a lot of trash in there, remove the fuel line from tank. Clean the filter with carb. cleaner. Then clean the tank with carb. cleaner. If you still have problem. Replace the Air inlet tube, (clear tube with screw type device close to carb).

Will not start after setting 4 years

the 455 rancher chain saw is a two cycle motor. Two cycle motors do not have valves in them.Stihl in another matter.Take the muffle off the saw and look to see what the piston rings look like.If they are brownish in color then you need to thak the cylinder head off and clean the piston and rings. usualy it is carbon and old oil.Hogwash works very well in this situation.Use only your hand to rub the hogwash around the piston.Even thought this doesn't sound like your problem. The trouble will be in the car. itself. The gas that was in the carb is on longer. You will need to replace the diaphram and gaskets in the carb.Once you do this the fuel will get to the cylinder.and the saw will fire.Make sure that you ran the oil mixture on the heavy side for the first tank of fuel. This will oil the bearings down in side the crank case.they way be gummed up from sitting for so long. After the first tank of fuel is used up then use regular mixture.
