The clonking noise I assume is the starter drive (bendix) engaging the flywheel. Could be the starter, or a bad connection on your cables from the battery to the solonoid and then to the starter. Check your ground connections from the negative side of the battery to the motor ground also. Clean all connections throughly. IF you have a tester, check the voltage to the starter terminal when it is engaged. It should be close to 12V , if it's low then work on those connections. If none of that works, make sure your motor is free to turn. Try and turn the motor pully, if you can't turn by had, then carefully try to turn slightly with channel locks. If the motor is locked up the starter can't turn it. If all that doesnt work, then the starter could be bad.

Hi,
You may want to look at the starter drive gear. It is on top of the starter. These gears do wear out. They are made of plastic.
They can be replaced.
Good Luck !!!!!!!!

I have a 2011 Troy Bilt Bronco w/Kohler Courage 20 engine. Battery is fully charged and spark plug is good but it will not crank. no noise at all. Any suggestions as to what the issue could be?

a battery can seem to be charge with sparks and all but could be totally out of service. if you're sure it's not the battery, try with a rubber hammer to hit gently the starter cause sometimes the coal dust can stuck it.

My husqvarna rider won't start sometimes. Could it

That depends, does the starter turn the engine over or not. If not is the battery fully charged? If it is fully charged then it could be the starter but more information would be needed.

My troy bilt riding mower wont crank

Check your battery and see if its fully charged. I had a battery that the charger said was fully charged but a cell was dead. Take it to a battery store and they will check it free of charge.
If that's not the problem check all the battery cables on both ends for being tight and clean. If that's not the problem you could have a bad starter.

The battery is charged and the mower will not start unless it is jumped.

take your battery somwhere to get tested a bad battery can show like it is fully charged. If battery is good it will be a bad starter.

Pull start won't pull, seems stuck.

When you pull the cord it will turn the blade. Therfore if the blade is stuck or clogged with clippings the starter cord will seem stuck. In addition, the throttle on the handgrip need to be fully depressed for the starter cord to work. Last, some mowers have a saftey which lock the starter if the wheels are engaged. Hope this helps. Turnover problem with toro 16-42z riding mower

A fully charged battery should read a minimum of 12.65, if it does not and connections and grounds are dirty then that's your problem. Start with a none fully charged battery. If you can bypass the solenoid and start it then the culprit is the solenoid. Good luck. donnyb60

Dropped / Stuck valve?

Major Overheat?

Battery weak (understand it is fully charged... but is it delivering proper amperage under load?)

bad connections betwixt battery and solenoid, then solenoid to starter?

Weak starter motor?
