Question about Lowrance LGC-12S GPS Receiver GPS Receiver

Open Question

Lowrance LGC-12s GPS antenna - does anyone know where I can buy one of these, or the LGC-12 (NOT the LGC-12w as it's WAAS and I need differential)? Or does anyone have an 2nd hand one they'd like to sell? Also the 5-channel antenna - LGC-1 would be useful, so long as it is differential rated - it will have DGPS written on the underside (instead of just GPS) Many thanks.

WAAS is differential for North America. Are you somewhere else in the world? If not I think the LGC-W will work for you needs. Please feel free to clarify. These are very old units and have been replaced by the LGC-4000 that will most likely not work for your unit. What Lowrance unit do you have?

We're in the UK and still on differential, although a lot are using WAAS here too.
We've tried the LGC 12w from the UK Lowrance agent (Navico) and it didn't work.
We know the LGC-12 and LGC-12s are old units (and the LGC-1 is even older!) so we're just trying to locate some. Our Lowrance units are the LMS 350A and we have 3 still working excellently. 2 of them have the older software, hence needing the LGC-1 (differential rated = DGPS, not just GPS) and one has the newer software which takes the LGC-12 or 12s. But nothing is new enough to take the LGC-12w sadly.
Thank you very much for your quick response, much appreciated.

Go to lowrance's website and run through their set up tutorial / instructions for the unit, there is also a software upgrade you can do online for the unit.

SOURCE: lcx-15ct (gps module not responding)

Before you give up on the LGC-12S you have now though, try plugging the LGC-12S right into the LCX-15CT without an extension cable. If the module not responding goes away...you just need a new extension (GPSX-25G p/n 99-46).

The power cable has a set of yellow, blue, orange, and bare data wires. If these wires short together, you can get the module not responding error.

If all that doesn't help...the LGC-12S is bad.

The LGC-12W p/n 112-06 will work with the LCX-15CT. You probably get this at many marine electronics dealers or go to lei-extras.com and buy it straight from Lowrance. They cost $229 so you might want to shop around putting that money into a whole new system altogether.
Make sure you have the latest software updates if you get the newer LGC-12W. These can be downloaded at http://www.lowrance.com/en/Downloads/Product-Software-Updates/

Let me know if you need more help.

Out of the box, no. To get GPS/Mapping/chartplotting features, you have to hook up a separate LGC-12S 12-parallel channel GPS receiver/antenna device which is sold separately.

I have a lcx16 sounder gps with a lgc12s antenna receiver. The gps module is not responding Do I need a new antenna ?

more than likely you do or you have a bad connection. It's always best to take this sort of issue to a shop in the event something is wrong with the unit itself before buying the new gps.

The GPS claims that the transponder is not communicating. All cabling looks fine and there is no apparent damage to the head.

Normally this error shows that something is wrong with the antenna itself. If the unit is old it's best to change it out. most gps antennas are only good for about 5-10 years. unless you have had a lightning strike close by then less. The other thing is to make sure that you don't have the internal gps selected in the menu and that you have both terminators on the nmea 2000 network that the LGC-2000 is connected to.

Garmin gps 12 wont turn on.

Sorry to hear of the dead units. Are you using the correct power cable with a small hole in the centre of the plug? The GPS 12 is strictly limited to 7 volts only. The accessory cigarette lighter cable for this model has a circuit inside to drop the voltage from 12 to 7. Cannot be fixed. There would have been a plastic peg in the back of the GPS socket to prevent anything but the correct voltage Garmin cable being plugged in. Unfortunately these pegs are easily broken off. Yes, they are a good little unit even though well on in years. The next model up - the 12XL - can accept a wide voltage range and does not have the plastic peg.

All the best, Tony at KiwiGPS.

Power to Lowrance GPS

Hi,

Yes you have to hook up the red wires together to the + and both black ones to the negative, otherwise the antenna won't be supply in current , and don't forget to insert behind the red wire a fuse and a switch to avoid to discharge your battery .
