First you need to check your DVD rom drivers if it is detected in the Device manager window, Just click on Start , Control Panel, System then Device manager there you can check the list of all your devices.
  • In Device Manager look for DVD/CD-rom drives click the arrow or plus sign on the left to show he sub Menu.
  • Check to see if there are any Marks such as question marks, Exclamation Points or Red X's.
  • Hopefully there are none of any, if there is try uninstalling the driver then restart the machine it should automatically reinstall the DVD/CD-rom.
  • Now to get the not reading error, Click on Start, then on the Start Search Bar type on REGEDIT then press enter. mvincentc_35.jpg
  • This will open the Registry Editor Window.
  • In the Registry Window follow this key path = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Once the dvd/cd-rom appears a list on the Right pane window will show, on the list looke for upper and lower filters then delete both then close the registry window then restart you computer.

This should help restore you DVD/CCD-rom back to a reading state.

Please try to download the codecs and also try with the un-installing the DVD drive from the device manager.

Codecs weblink : http://www.free-codecs.com/K_lite_codec_pack_download.htm

Copy and paste this web link in the address bar.

Locate " Download [ K-Lite Codec Pack 5.6.1 FULL ] " from the list and click on it to start downloading the codecs. Once the download is complete, please double click on the downloaded file to install.

My cd rom drive is missing from my computer

HI SIR,
Its easy to solve this..

how to solve:
  • Make sure your CD ROM drive is properly connected to your computer.
  • Double click on your My Computer icon and click on "View system information" under the System Tasks area at the top left hand corner of the window.
  • Next, choose the Hardware tab and click on the Device Manager button.
  • look through the list for the DVD/CD ROM drives and click on the little plus sign ( + ) to expand it.
If one does, it means that your CD ROM device is connected and that it does have power. If nothing comes up, you may have some internal connection problems with the power and the ribbon cables. To check on this, shut down your computer, remove the two cables that go along with the connectors on the back of the drive and reset them firmly back in. Also, check on the ribbon cable and ensure that it is plugged tightly into the motherboard.

When you have done all of that, restart your computer and try the above directions again (in the device manager). If you still don't have anything listed, your CD ROM drive may be defective. Now, if you have tried all of this and nothing has worked yet, as I said before, it could be a software problem. So, let's go ahead and explore that.

In the device manager listing, right click on the item that appears in the list and choose Properties. Look in the Device Status area and see if there an error (could be error code 19, 31, 32, 39 or 41). If this is the case, you won't be able to use the original software for your CD ROM drive, but you could do a search online for your drive's vendor and see if you can download the latest driver software for your particular CD ROM drive. This along with a restart of your computer can solve the problem.

Another thing that may help is the system restore feature that Windows XP offers. Read about system restore here before you go any further. A system restore can place your computer back to a time when it was working properly. If you can remember the last time you know your CD ROM drive was working right, do a restore for that date. This may solve your "missing drive" issue. With any luck, it will.

thank you
vino

i think you are going to have to boot into bios and where it shows the boot configuration look to see if there is a cdrom there if not change it so the computer will have the cd rom in there along with the harddrive and the a drive then save it and exit and reboot then the cd rom should be back into the device manager and also under my computer

Dell Dimension 2350 DVD/CD Rom Drivers

Hello,

According to the info in your post, here a firmware update for you drive from Dells site. This assumes that you have xp as listed on dells site.

If you do not have xp, you can look at the service tag on the side of your machine (it should be 7 digits). After you have that you can enter it here http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen

After you get that info you should have a screen that list the different components of your system. You will want to click the + beside CD/DVD. Then you will want to look for your model number that you listed above and dowload wants available for it.

It usually automatially installs and corrects the issue but if not you may want to open the device manager by clicking Start > Run and typing devmgmt.msc. This willl take you to the Device Manager. Open the DVD/CD section and right click the drive listed above and choose Remove or Uninstall. After it disappears, restart the machine and install the firmware update that was downloaded earlier.

Thanks
