Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Loud sounds, but still works?

Hi, have a Spacemaker model JVM1631BJ 03 - 2-3 yrs old (came new w/the home)...

Makes an awfully loud noise when we use it, but it still cooks fine... thoughts? Do I need a new one? Seeing the cost of having a repair, might just buy new.

Thanks!

I'd say vent grille... the sound starts 2 seconds into the cook time, and continues throughout.

Again, the food cooks fine, so we've been rolling with it. This has probably been happening for 3 months or so.

Thank you very much for any direction you can provide!!

    Chris

Where does the noise seem to come from?

Behind the control panel or the middle of the vent grille?

Well, it's tough to say more surely without hearing it, etc.

I'd say to use it (and always stay close to it when you do) until and unless some other symptoms occur.

And this is not a cop out - sometimes watchful waiting is called for.

It's always recommended that you never leave a running microwave unattended, but in this case even more so.

Be especially aware if either of the fans quits or if any odd smells occur.

The GE Spacemaker Microwave Oven model JVM1540 makes a loud fan noise whenyou turn it on. Sounds like the exhast fan but it not?

It sounds like from the description when it is running the noise comes from the magnetron, some microwaves are louder than others, but this could be an early sign the magnetron is going.

My built in lamona oven makes a smell like electicals burning and makes a loud whirring noise when switched on. Any ideas why? have had an electrician in to replace the mechanism inside and the problem is...

This sounds like the magnetron is failing, with a typical smell and a loud noise, there are two additional parts that can be a factor, the high voltage capacitor and diode. To pursue this you will need an appliance repairman or tv technician, the parts and labor will probably run the cost of a new microwave oven.

The unit is 3 years old and when I turn it on there is a loud hum. Theunit also does not heat but turns the turntable?

From your description it sounds like the magnetron has failed in this oven. That's the part the makes the microwaves to heat the food. It typically fails by shorting out and making a loud hum noise. It not usually worth fixing since the price of a replacement magnetron is almost as much as a new oven.

It made a loud noise and was starting to smoke.

Sounds like the magnitron is shot, I wouldn't attempt to use it anymore. When a magnitron goes bad it actually gets much stronger than the unit is made to handle.

Makes loud noise when running like a high pitched noise

You have a bad magnetron. Just replace the unit. It will cost more to fix than to buy a new one. There are great deals on new microwaves now.

New microwave; loud fan when heating items

Since you say it's new, it should be under warranty. I would call GE (see your owner's manual) to get a local authorized service center. Then while you're on the phone with the service center, you can start it up and hold the phone close to it to demonstrate to the technician how loud it is. They should be able to tell you if it will be covered under warranty so you get it fixed free.
