We have a Thomson Freeview box model DHD4000, serial no. 0000003181. It has suddenly ceased downloading the overnight data onto the hard-disc. We are therefore unable to record programmes as normal. Please help.

The data is no longer being broadcast, and isn't likely to ever be broadcast again. See http://wotsat.techradar.com/news/4tv-freeview-epg-cut-teletext-extra-unaffected-02-07-10

It was helpful insofar as I now have a reason for the failure. Obviously, it was not of any practical help! What a shame that such a good bit of kit should be rendered virtually useless by such a ridiculously simple problem.

If you select all the available channels for Anytime to download from then the box divides up the available drive space in such as way as to leave you with just 16 hours' worth of space for your personal recordings. The only way to free up more room for your own recordings is to reduce the number of channels you want downloading, which rather takes away the whole point of the system to start with, and also is not actually much of a remedy. After pruning the channel download list quite ruthlessly we were still only left with 31 hours of personal space and that is still really not enough.

The Sky-like UI
This box needs a fair bit more disk space or a more fluid method of dividing up the available space, perhaps by allowing you to alter the length of time the system stores downloaded content. As it is, programmes downloaded will erase themselves after six days unless moved into the personal storage - so exit the 31 hours, stage-left, at a gallop - thereby ensuring the hard drive always has space for the following period's downloads.
Fortunately, the box is smart enought to automatically check that no programmes downloaded overnight match any of the programmes already recorded to avoid doubling up on content.

Hi is there a site where they have an online manual for the thomson pvr

For which model PVR do you need the manual? The manual for the DHD4000 is available on this page: http://dtt.opennet.co.uk/thomson.htm#Manual . A few other Thomson DVR manuals are here: http://tv.manualsonline.com/manuals/mfg/thomson_multimedia/thomson_multimedia_dvr_product_list.html . Some of these links have manuals; others have requests for manuals.

I am not aware of any other sources.

After recording a programme last night on my thomson freeview box a flashing orange light came on. i have tried switching it off at the plug, but the flashing light is still there

Hi, a common problem with the thomson freeview boxes is capacitors leaking in the power supply, The ones that go usually are the two 1000uf capacitors. If any of the capacitors look deformed, ie the tops look domed in any way. I would change them , Handy if you know how to use a soldering iron. If you can use a soldering iron remember to put the new capacitor in the same way ( the wires are marked so you must put them in the same way round).

Thomson dti6300-16

You can still record all the freeview channels. What has happened is you've run out of room on your hard drive. First you must deselect all the top up channels;
menu > 'Setup' > 'Customise TUTV', and un-ticking all boxes releases space and produces a report of '100%' free for recording. The time available for recording depends on the size of the hard drive and amount of data saved in each recording and 15% of disc space is not counted. This is for software or programme information etc. and, even when not subscribed, ads from TUTV are downloaded to library. However they are replaced or removed automatically, and messages are deleted after a week.
Also delete all the recordings in the library you don't need anymore.

Thomson dti6300-16 won't record freeview channels....

maybe a defragged hard drive follow this procedure:
1. Select Menu, Set-Up, Help.
2. Press the Green button on the remote control.
3. This shows the Advanced Information screen.
4. Now press the Blue button which will prompt you with a warning box.
5. Now press the Green button if you wish to proceed.
6. The DTR will take around a minute to complete the reformat, and will then automatically restart itself.
Next do a channel rescan.
