Question about Singer Sewing Machines

Foot pedal is getting extremely hot

I have a singer overlocker/serger, the foot pedal gets extremely hot. I returned it when I first purchased it and was told by the technician that there was nothing wrong with it. When I use it, it smells like something is melting/burning and the base of the pedal gets too hot to touch. the technician told me this was NORMAL. I have not been using it as I am scared it will catch fire, even though I have only used it twice obviously the warranty has expired. does anyone else have this problem with there singer.

I would suggest that you do not use the pedal. there is no chance that the foot pedal has to heat up. this is an anomaly and checked within. open the pedal and look inside. you will locate a switch/ circuit. If there is heat building up remove the mains connection and test carefully with you finger for the heat build up area. Also smell for any burning. You will get to the fault with no difficulty. If not replace with a new pedal.Try to send a mail to your singer dealer with the fact that it is unusual and dangerous. I am sure they will replace it for you fearing any accident. So check this out. hope my advice helps. Good day

My serger doesnt make any stitches at all. I have been going through this book for 3 years and I cant get it to work

Has it ever chained off since you bought it? If you purchased it second hand it is possible that the timing of the loopers is out and this will prevent a chain from forming.

However, I'll go through general overlocker/serger troubleshooting for threading up. The critical things are to thread it exactly as the diagram shows, some sergers have a diagram inside the front looper cover so its easy to refer to when you are working on the machine. Or use the manual diagram. There is a sequence you need to follow in threading up, usually upper looper, lower looper, then the needles. This is important. Then you pull all four threads under the raised pressure foot, lower the pressure foot, and start to stitch and hopefully a chain forms. If you need to change a thread you can knot on a new colour, turn the tension to zero, then pull through the new thread. Pull the knot right through the looper eyes but you will need to cut the knot out and thread the needles with the new colour once you get there. Then turn tension back to the normal setting (5 usually) and again pull all threads under the foot.

The timing of the two loopers to the needles is critical to a stitch forming though so if you have tried everything and aren't getting a result; then perhaps its time to take it to a service centre, get it checked out and if it works fine for them, ask for a quick demo of threading up, then do it yourself with the demonstrator watching.

Overlockers are very different to sewing machines and there is a learning curve but once mastered, they are so quick and give a great finish.

Do you have a manual, project book or anytrhing that gives information on how to use the features of the 936 surger?

I would suggest that you contact Husqvarna Viking to purchase a manual for your 936 serger, their contact details are here.
http://www.husqvarnaviking.com/us/406.htm

You could also get lots of general sewing info from Debbie Cosgrove at http://sewing.about.com/od/sergersoverlock/ss/serger.htm sewing.about.com is a fantastic source of information on sewing techniques, sewing machines, sergers and projects too.

Sergers are quite differernt to a sewing machine and there are plenty purchased, used once or twice, then put away or sold because they are a bit difficult. But like any new skill learnt, taking a class and learning hands on is so much better than trying to figure out from a manual so if you can find a local Husky dealership, I'd enquire about an "intro to serger" type class, well worth the money and time.

Yours will probably do a three thread overlock, 4 thread overlock and rolled hem stitch, these three seams will cover a variety of sewing tasks and applications. You can seam knits and lycra with the 4 thread, and neaten the raw edges of just about all fabrics with a three thread. The rolled hem allows you to do a small covered edge which covers the fabric cut edge wrapping the thread around it closely. Beautiful on very light weight fabric edges like ruffles and frills where you have yards of fabric to neaten, much quicker than turning edge twice and straight stitching it.

There are other techniques with a serger such as sewing stretched elastic onto fabric, sewing over nylon fishing line to give a fluted edge or stitching over a string of beads. These are best done with a special foot for this purpose, elasticator or beading foot. You can also use decorative threads through the loopers to give an attractive finish.

There are several good sewing with a serger books on the market, Singer does one but there are other great ones too. You could always borrow one from the library before committing to buying it.

I've just got janome 634d serger, how can i make the bottom of a T-shirt ? Thank you so much

If you want the bottom of the T to look like RTW with the double row of stitching, you cannot do this on a serger.

You can achieve the effect by using a twin needle, two spools of thread, bobbin and a straight stitch.

Make sure the double/twin needle will pass through the presser foot and opening in the needle plate below the presser foot.

Practice on a double layer of a scrap of the T shirt material as the tension may need to be slightly looser than the normal setting.
