Is the computer dirty inside? Have you checked to see whether the Processor fan power cable from the motherboard, is occasionally being drawn into the fan? Making the occasional ticking sound?

it is not that when it is ticking it stops the other programmes woking

Is this in direct reference to a Dell Inspiron 531 desktop computer? If so, does it have the optional Floppy Disk drive, and if this holds true, is there a Floppy Disk in said drive? Again if there is a Floppy Disk drive, and no disk present in the drive, remove the power cable to the drive. See if the ticking persists. If there is no Floppy Disk drive, AND if the unplugging of the power cable to it does no good, then the problem is the harddrive. Your harddrive is starting to fail. Suggest you copy all personal information off of the harddrive to disks, or thumbdrives 'Toot Suite'! Your harddrive is starting the 'Click of Death'.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbq8vfs1w...

How do i fix my 2001 740i bmw it makes a ticking sound win idleing

could possibly be a lifter tapping (Ticking) ,depending on how many miles the vehicle has on it might be time for lifters to be adjusted, most foreign overhead cam engines must have lifters adjuster periodically ,if you turn on the air its puts more of a load on the engine causing a louder sound (also check oil level an engine low on oil will start to tick too.. the more wear the engine gets the looser the lifters can get over time ,look in your service manual if you have one and see what the intervals are on lifter adjustment this can give you an idea.
possible only if
the ticking sound is coming from the top of the engine usually comes from under the vavle covers where the lifters are located,

A ticking sound on a 06 ford f150 super crew 5.4L

Ticking sound could be coming from a Coil-on-Plug, or a pcv valve, or (hope it's not) a valve lifter which could be sticking. Sticking lifter noise often disappears when rpm's change, or the noise comes & goes. try changing the motor oil & filter right after adding an Engine-Flush Treatment to the motor oil, running the engine for 10 minutes at idle with treatment added to the oil, then draining the oil & changing filter while oil is still very hot. That last part is very important, so be careful not to burn your hands - be careful. -- The sticking lifter is a likely cause if motor oil has not been changed at frequent intervals in the past (every 3-4K miles) -- dirty oil causes sticking lifters.

My Maxtor external hdd switches on, tries to start (spins etc) then switches off within a few seconds

Does the noise sound like a clicking noise at regular intervals?
If so, I'm afraid it sounds like the hard drive is dead and needs to be replaced.

2006 mazda 6 2.3 65,000 miles. It started making a very, very loud ticking / knocking noise at all times following the rpms. The valve clearences are within spec, but that's all i've checked. ...

Mobil oil won`t cause this problem however if the mechanical parts have just succumbed to metal fatigue or defect.the noise could be rocker arms, connecting rod noise or a failed piston.its hard to say without hearing the noise as it is to try and describe the noise.

Ticking noise

It is part of the waste gate just above the gas tank. It periodically checks for leaks and pressurizes and releases. Gives a ticking noise when it does this. Not a problem and GM is aware of this and said its normal on our cars.

Ticking/chirping sound during slow spin

it will more than likely be a bra wire stuck between inner and outer drum it will only sound when clothing is in it due to the weight of clothing and water so it wont be heard with just water init or by pushing it around by hand only thing u can really do is eiether strip it yourself or by getting an engineer in but what i would do is leave it after a while it will dislodge itself and go into the pipe underneath the washer in the pipe that is in the middle of the drum check this when the sound stops love
