Question about Fuji FinePix S304 Digital Camera

1 Answer

I have a Fuji Finepix S5600 and shortly I got the same problem: zoom error. First I tried the telephone trick but it didn't work. Then I tried solution #10 by LizK76, but how can I separate the back of the camera from the rest. I have to loosen some sort of mini flatcable connectors (of the LCD monitor) but I don't know how to do that.

Thank you very much for your advice. It was very helpful. Now I was able to disassemble the camera. I hope it will work again when I have reassembled it again.

The zoom and focus operate on screw thread drives. 1 of these has detatched resulting in "ZOOM ERROR" and locked the camera up. Dis-assemble lens and re-attach drive.
Start by removing all the securing screws for the casing. There should be 2 on each side and 3 underneath. 2 of the one's underneath will be tri-wing screws (security screws) so you will need to purchase a screwdriver for this ( I paid £1 for mine on ebay). Make sure there are no screws located under the rubber cover for the usb and av sockets ( Im working from memory here)
Best to have a box with compartments in to put screws etc in as you dis-assemble to aid re-assembly. Open battery compartment ( this helps lock the case together) and gentley open the case. It will have plastic clips holding it together also so be carefull of these. The lcd is screwed to the back case too and conected to the pcb as is the key pad so don't lift the back away instantly incase the ribbons tear. Once you have the back removed its just a case of unscrewing the pcb and unplugging the different cables. I think the power board is under the main pcb so will have to remove this to get at the lens unit( Beware of electric shock. It does hurt!) Remove the fixing screws for the lens unit and remove it from the case. The zoom is on a long screw thread which runs from a small motor and gear drive. There should be a little plastic or metal attachment that runs up and down the thread which should be located on the sliding lens which is the zoom. If I remember the motor assembly needs to be removed to re-attach the zoom assembly to the drive thread. Then re-assemble.

Zoom Error Problem

No, your lens has several very small motors, dust sand or water gets in can cause problems. Fuji has a huge problem with these cameras and bad lens. You will always have this problem and there is no easy fix.

Focus error

Check out this link: www.digitalcamera-hq.com/digital-cameras/fuji-finepix-z1_question.html?qid=4289
After the basics, try dropping the camera on a carpeted area from about 2-3 feet. It worked for my Fuji A500 and 90% of the responders on the link. Everything on the web said it would cost ~$100 to fix. I was in the process of researching new cameras to buy and had nothing to lose by dropping it on the floor.
The error may be caused by debris in the zoom mechanism preventing it from working. Dropping the camera loosens the debris and voila!

I had the same problem and finally had the time to look at it. I was reading some other posts, when I read try the telephone trick. Leave the camera closed and kinda slam it on a hard surface. I slid the shutter open and focused and it took a pic with no problem!!!

Hit the lens (smack it on you're leg); that seems to be the solution..........
But try cleaning the lens and the AF assistent first!!
