It doesnt need a battery to start and the headlight will only work when the engine runs and the ignition switch is in a second position.
You will probably need to find another ignition for it to all work.
If you try dissconnecting the ignition completely at the plug, it may spark, as the ignition switch has a kill circuit in it, which is to stop the engine. the on position really only completes the circuit for the indicators and horn and brake lights.
They are only 6v, a 12v charger can damage electrics

could be a spark plug failing under the higher compression of the increased rpms
start by changing the plug and or HT lead or coil if independent of the other cylinder

I have a 84 Honda NightHawk 700s and I turn on my bike and the headlight does not turn on unless I hit the hi beam switch, what could be wrong in the wiring?

Hi, Anonymous if your headlight is not working the first thing to check is the headlight bulb for damaged filaments then check your light circuit fuse, that being said the usual suspects are:
1. Faulty ground or power supply to headlight bulb socket.
2. Faulty hi/lo beam switch.
3. Faulty ignition switch.
4. Fuse is good but no continuity on both sides.
5. Faulty wiring between battery positive and headlight bulb socket.

No electrical power when I turn on the key for a 1998 Honda XL650

Hi, Anonymous before testing any electrical component in the Starting System it is "IMPERATIVE" that you have a fully charged battery of 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage, the battery is faulty and must be replaced. AGM type batteries fall into this scenario more so than lead acid batteries.
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Check the battery terminals for damage or corrosion check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter.
4. Bank angle sensor needs a reset or is faulty.
5. FOB battery low or dead.
6. Faulty ignition switch.
7. Faulty starter button.
8. Faulty kickstand, clutch, neutral safety switch.
9. Security alarm needs a reset.
10. Starter relay, solenoid, starter motor or circuit wiring faulty.
11. Starter armature or field coils have failed.
12. Main fuse or circuit breaker may be blown or faulty.
13. Faulty ignition relay.
14. The electric starter is working but starter clutch has failed.
15. Check for engine trouble codes.

Motor turn over as soon as I put the battery cable on .

Hi,

For the motor to engage even with ignition off would indicate that the starting relay/solenoid is faulty and the contacts are fused together. Another possibility and that could also be responsible for the missing lights would be a mis-connected connector.

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.
