Question about Garmin Nuvi 660 GPS Receiver

I have no maps on the screen its like i lost all the data. it says there are no roads near this start point. every thing else works mp3, settings, volume, bluetooth, etc.

Sorry for the long answer, but the details may help someone with the other problems I ran into.
First a little background so that you can see if you have a similar experience. Skip this part if you want to try my fix for the problem. I have a Nuvi 205 and it ran out of internal memory so it could not complete map updates. I got the "No Detailed Maps Found That Support Routing" or "No Map Data Available" warning. To fix this, I downloaded and installed the MapInstall program from Garmin's website and used it to install another copy of the current map. I downloaded that copy to the computer - "installed it to the computer" in Garmin speak. Use the Garmin Express program to get the date file (Device>Advanced tab) and then installed it on the memory card I have in the Garmin unit using MapInstall.
That got the map installed on the unit and resolved the no map data warning. However, the new map did not have the local streets, speed limits, etc. I could not search for roads or POIs. I only saw highways. Spoken directions did not include exits, etc.
Next, I moved the old existing data files from the Garmin folder on the device to my computer. I'm not sure how safe this is, but I wanted Garmin Express to have some room to install the maps as it was designed to do. I figured I could put them back if everything went wrong. It booted up okay and worked as before, so I used Garmin Express to do a "normal" update. With the space available on the internal memory, the update went smoothly. Still, I had no local streets, towns, etc.
THE FIX:
I realized the data must be there now, so I looked through the menus on the device. What I found was that the maps weren't selected. Here's where I found it on my Nuvi 205:
Menu > Tools > Settings > Map > Map Info
If the checkbox is unchecked, check it. That will tell the Garmin unit to use that map data and should restore the maps and other features for you.

It sounds like you may have just deselected the maps.

go to tools settings map then map info(bottom of the screen)

check that there is a tick next to your mapset if not just tap the name of the map and you should be sorted out.

Do a hard reset on your GPS. Download and install Garmin Express from Garmin. Plug your GPS into your computer. The software will identify your GPS and allow you to download new maps to it.

Try connecting it to your computer via a USB cable. Then log on to Garmin's webiste and download a map update. Then you can put the map update on your GPS to replace the ones you lost. All Garmin customers get one free map update. After than it's about $40-$60 dollars for an update.

No roads near starting point


I assume that there should be roads there. It may be that the map is unselected.
  1. Press TOOLS
  2. Press SETTINGS
  3. Press MAPS
  4. At the bottom of the screen press MAP INFO
You should see the name of the maps installed on your satnav. There should be a tick beside the maps if it's selected. If there's not press the map name to select it. This should solve your problem.

maybe someone unchecked your map ...


try this to see if its chosen go to Tools..... Settings......Map......on Map Info on bottom of screen it the Map you want to use have a checkmark in it?

If not put one there

it may just be that the maps are deselected. to correct this go into the tools/settings/map and then at the bottom of the screen in the middle you will see map info tap that and then at the next screen it will show you the maps which are installed if there are any without ticks just tap the box. tap ok and try again if. if there are no map choices then you will need to reinstall the maps on your unit

Garmin nuvi 1340 freezes on start up


If your nuvi series device is freezing on the map screen but still providing voice prompts there are two steps you can try to resolve the issue including updating the software using WebUpdater* and performing a master reset.

To download WebUpdater and update the software:
  1. Go to http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp
  2. Follow the on screen instructions.

Warning: A master reset will erase all waypoints or favorites and will restore your unit to the default factory settings.

sounds like you might not have the new map set selected

settings -> map -> map info (make sure the NT 2009 map is checked)

Do you see a map, with street detail? Any SD card installed?
Tap the wrench symbol, tap mapping, tap about, any maps checked? if not, check the apropriate map and go back to the map screen

Have you updated the software since you purchased the unit? If not, go to Garmin's site, download WebUpdater and check to see if there is an update to the unit's software. If so, download this and see if it helps. If not, try downloading the same version of the software again. This might help also.

Updated to 2008 maps, now I lost my local roads and town maps


Turn on the Garmin. Look for the little wrench on the screen and select it. Now look for Map, select Map. Now look for Map Detail. Verify that it is set to "Normal" or Higher to get more map details.
