Question about ASUS Eee PC 900 PC Notebook

3 Answers

The hard drive parttioning between C and D is approximately 3.5gb and 7.5gb respectively; Windows XP Home is using up most of the C memory and I need more memory in C to allow the down load of other programmes. In fact there is nothing extra to even tload or run my anti virus software Can I change the partitioning of the hard drives to give C about 500mb of extra memory from the D drive? There is still 1.5gb spare on the D drive.

Yes, you can transfer free space , but resizing is a very risky operation if you don't fully know what you're doing. Just leave it like that and install the programs in the D partition.

I have a program called partition magic it works very well with normal HDDs single or multi partitioned with which you can increase a partition at the expense of a neighboring one. I have when installing programs put them on D: but C: still cops some stuff anyway, though they don't sound much, fonts can get rather large in number on our tiny SSD also I have had to turn off auto updates right from the start and moved My docs,My pics etc to a very fast 8gig SD card in the card reader slot. look for a free program called WinDirStat and google a how to use it, what it does is show your hard drive in diagrammatically so you can see what is taking up all the room and move or remove it, be careful though. I too would gladly sacrifice some of my D: drive especially since I now have a 500 gig external 2.5" HDD. In conclusion don't give up I love my little 900 it's so quick I'm sure SSDs are the best thing to happen to computers ever, hopefully the price will come down soon. I bought mine the first week they came out in Australia, all the shops I phoned had sold out so I took a demo model for $50 less, I rarely use my rather expensive super fast desktop now because I teach IT and need to work on my computer anytime anywhere I have a broadband dongle with Vodaphone and will be getting a larger capacity battery. It suits my needs perfectly. Good luck John

I used twinkle cam successfully in windows xp. I have upgraded to windows 7. How do I get the driver or will anything work?

According to http://www.chicony.com.tw/download/di/driver.asp , the available drivers were written in 2004. Chicony has stopped supporting their cameras for newer Windows OS versions. I suspect they never made a 64-bit version of the driver for XP 64-bit.

If you had the 32-bit version of Windows 7, you might be able to use the compatibility mode to install the driver. To check your version, click on Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System. Look for your Windows version and check if it says x64. If you see that in the description, you have the x64 bit version. Otherwise, right-click on the driver file from the above site (after extracting the files from the zip file). Choose Properties and the Compatibility tab. Check the box for always Run this program in the compatibility mode and set it to Windows XP in the drop-down menu. You may need to repeat this on the camera software as well.

If you have a 64-bit version Windows Home Premium, you may be better off upgrading to Windows 7 Pro or Ultimate. Then you can download and install Virtual PC and the XP mode, if your hardware can handle that software. This gives a virtual version of the 32-bit version XP that will run your camera. (The CPU needs to have virtualization support and it has to be enabled in the BIOS. Then you need enough memory to give the virtual XP at least 512MB -1GB of memory.) If you already have Windows 7 Pro or Ultimate, just use XP mode. Other virtual PC software exists but they require a licensed version of XP. (If you can find a valid license.) The only issue I've found is that files saved to the C: drive in one OS can't be accessed by the other OS. You have to transfer the files with an external drive, flash drive or burn the file to optical disc.

Dual boot systems with XP and Windows 7 can be set up if you have the XP license. Then pick the OS you need when you boot up the computer. This requires you to repartition the hard drive or have two bootable hard drives. Make sure to back up before partitioning the drive.

I wish that I had better news for you.

I'm trying to move files from old computer to new computer.

The easiest way is to use an USB memory stick, plug this USB memory stick into the XP computer and copy the files from the XP computer to the USB memory stick, then remove the USB memory stick and plug it into the Windows 7 computer and copy the files from the USB memory stick to the Windows 7 computer.

What is pagefile.sys do? And why does it take so much space? Also I wanted Windows XP to look more like Windows 7, can any one help?

Pagefile is reserved space on the hard drive in case you run out of physical memory, the hard drive can write the overflow to the hard drive and not crash the PC.

For the Windows 7 look for xp, Google this: Windows 7 theme for XP. You'll find many themes for free that will make xp look like Windows 7 there.

Cheers!

How to download vista, and wat is the requirments need for vista

Please Dont install VISTA, it is bloated, slow and buggy.
Either stick with XP or use Windows 7, 7 is far better than Vista.
If you are after a free download, try this 1 http://isohunt.com/torrent_details/204960365/windows+7?tab=summary
, you will need a torrent client like Utorrent, this is here http://www.utorrent.com/downloads
The download will take a while, it will come with an activation patch.
You usually install windows 7 without the serial, then run the patch after to make it genuine.

Downloaded window 7 on my netbook and forgot to backup before installing i had xp

Sadly, there is no direct upgrade path for XP (pro or home) to Windows 7, only Vista. Windows 7 from XP requires a clean install.

Still, check the hard drive and see if Windows 7 moved the files to another location. It installs differently from XP or Vista and there may be a chance they are still somewhere on the drive. Use the search feature to look for a known file and see what happens.
