You can go to this link for a free copy of the manual. Be advised that the device has hardware top prevent the copying of copyrighted media, so commercial VHS tapes will probably come out distorted if you try to dub them to DVD.
It sounds like you Brightness may have been turned down. Press your FN (Function) key and the F7 key at the same time. This will increase the brightness settings. If you press the F6 key, this will decrease the Brightness settings. In case you don't have a copy of the Users Manual for your computer you can go to the following website to download a copy:
Once you choose the manual for your model you can display a copy in a separate window and save a copy to your computer. Choose Printer Friendly version by clicking on the icon that looks like a printer. A new window will open up with the manual displayed. On the left hand side of the menu you will see an icon that looks like a floppy disk. Click on it and a window will open asking you where you want to save the manual. Pick a directory that you normally use to save documents and then click okay.
