Question about Maytag Neptune FAV6800AW Top Load Washer

1 Answer

Maytag neptune top load

I have a maytag neptune fav6800 top load washer. the first two digits on the serial number is 12. A bout a year ago i replaced the clutch. and it worked perfectly, Yesterday it started again with the same dc codes. Noticed this time that it was banging all 4 sides of the machine during the wash cycle. after a little research I cleand and relubed the clutch. it would turn CW just fine and dandy CCw it would lock up (like its supposed to ) there was no rust no broken bands nothing wrong with the clutch. so I put it back in. still the same problem with the power dissconntected i manually turned the clutch one way just the drum spun the other way the drum and the rollers so that tell me its not the clutch what could it be

Ok as I was running the quick wash the clutch spun off. My series 12 does not use the upper one way bearing. (I have used your clutch fix post for refrence on cleaning and reinstalling) I reinstalled the clutch and ran the quick wash cycle the basket is rotating CW while rotating the tumblers but I can use my hand to stop the basket and even spin it the other way. my clutch is in great shape no rust or anything.the spinner shaft coupler comes out very easy. i am starting to fell stupid am I putting this thing together wrong?

  • kellybond1 Jul 12, 2010

Ok I took the clutch off again the spinner shaft coupler pulls right out very easy. it spins CCW with very little resistance when i turn it CW it starts winding up the spring inside of it when I release it the spring unwinds thanks for all your help

Alrighty now I have once again taken the clutch off and relubed cleaned, reinstalled it. this time it would work with no clothes in it BUT you could tell that it wanted to turn clockwise,So i put clothes in it 5 towels to be exact and it is turning clockwise with the tumblers again!! I am now taking it apart again (#5) this time I will be using a mixture of hydraulic oil and copper-coat. for the lube it makes a Super slick surface. If you have any ideas please let me know. Ill keep you up to date with whats going on. Thanks for all the help. You have been awesome.

Is it possible that Im over tighten the clutch?
it takes very little pressure to keep the drum from turning CW.

  • kellybond1 Jul 13, 2010

nope its not overtighten the clutch tried to loosen it still the same.
Whats next a new clutch i guess

  • kellybond1 Jul 13, 2010

yes I can rotate the basket CW/CCW very easily. I went ahead and ordered the clutch anyway. It should be here in a few days. If i cant return it there is always ebay and a new samsung front load.
Ill try anything to fix this machine my wife really loves it hopefully someone else chimes in wit an idea

Thanks again for all your help Kelly

OK I read the post its real hard to follow the ay this board is laidout.
""wd 40'ed the collar and bearings...greased and put it back together."" What exactly is he cleaning and greasing i have the tub out of the machine turned over wd-40 soaking on the big nut and the little shaft. I keep spinning them with my cordless drill hoping it will eat the rust/grime away But its not freeing up. Exactly what keeps the basket from turning CW.
I have to figure out someway on making this thing work for a couple of weeks till i can get a new one.Any radical ideas that you want me to try im open to.

  • kellybond1 Jul 15, 2010

Man I sure do wish I could shaKe your hand!!!!

Its working great now thanks to your post helping me out sending me in the right direction. The last on you sent me to with the basket freespinning CW helped out the most. As you see in my last comments i used the cordless drill and a 16 point 1/2" socket to spin the shaft. I took some dirt and mushed it in around the spinner shaft and spun it with the drill for a while then slowly added WD-40with it still spinning i went thru 3 batteries till i was satisfied with it spinning like i thought it should. also the new clutch came in today. (Now keep in mind that this was a series 12 that did NOT have the second set of bearings on top) I installed the bearing that it did not have from the factory (but it had the place for it) and in stalled the new clutch not sure which one worked but the machine is running just as good as new mabey better now my wife can catch up on 4 days of a family of 5 dirty clothes

And its all thanks to you

Thank you very much Kelly B.

Kelly,
“”Yesterday it started again with the same dc codes. Noticed this time that it was banging all 4 sides of the machine during the wash cycle.””
Can you do a Quick Wash cycle with minimal settings Soil Level and Spin settings with an empty wash basket.
So after water fill if you raise the top of the machine and observe the Wash Basket you should see the tumblers rotating only. I think from your description you may observe the Wash Basket rotating CW and the tumblers rotating…..is that happening in Wash/Agitate cycle?

If that is so it seems to me that the Spinner Shaft Coupler (my name for it) is seized into the Clutch Pulley One-Way Roller Clutches Bearing in the Clutch Mounted One-Way Roller Clutches bearing mounted in the white bearing plate. And or the Upper One-Way Roller Clutches bearing ring if you Series 12 machine does use the Upper Bearing ring. I know the Series 10 and 11 use that upper bearing ring.
Does you Series 12 FAV6800A Clutch Pulley use the Upper One-Way Roller Clutches bearing ring?

Have you used my Clutch Fix post for reference on maintenance and or replacement of the FAV6800A/FAV9800A? In that post I have a comment labeled “”Let’s demystify dC and uC error codes plaguing the FAV6800A and the LCD Flavor FAV9800A””
I would drop your Clutch Pulley out and verify that the Spinner Shaft Coupler will rotate CW &CCW in both the Clutch Pulley One-Way Roller Clutches bearing white bearing plate and the Upper bearing ring if you machine does use that upper bearing ring.
If you can let me know the results? I will try to help…..Rich

    Kelly,

So the wash basket is still rotating CW in wash cycle correct?

If so I would wash out the Clutch Pulley One-Way Roller Clutches bearing with WD-40 and re-lube with something like Slick 50 One Lube.

I don’t see how the integrated One-Way Roller Clutches bearing that is part of the Lower Outer Tub Bearing for Series 12 and above machines is causing this issue.

Maytag went to the integrated One-Way Roller Clutches bearing I believe as a new and improved design. The Outer Tub was redesigned for this new integrated bearing assembly. See this post from a forum member replacing his noisy Outer Tub bearings. http://www.fixya.com/support/t3973659-fa... the solution by garzini1
He had to post as a solution to insert Pics of the bearing assembly.

Again I don’t at this time feel this Lower Outer Tub bearing assembly is causing your issue.

I would re-lube the Clutch Pulley mounted One-Way Roller Clutches bearing on the white bearing plate.

Good Luck………..Rich He had to post as a solution to insert Pics of the bearing assembly.

    Kelly,

“”Is it possible that Im over tighten the clutch? it takes very little pressure to keep the drum from turning CW.“”

No I tighten it Snug I have not use my Torque Wrench for 8 Foot Pounds. Snug only do not over tighten. If the Clutch Pulley and Spinner Shaft Coupler are seated properly it will stay on.

“”nope its not overtighten the clutch tried to loosen it still the same. Whats next a new clutch i guess””

If you can rotate The One-Way White Bearing plate around the Spinner Shaft Coupler as I show in my Clutch Fix post with no indication of bearing drag I would feel this is not the root cause of the issue. I’m wondering if you have increased bearing resistance of the two bearings that the Agitator shaft ride in to drive the transmission. Or if there is increased drive train resistance thru the tranny or the wash basket tumblers driven by the tranny causing this slow CW rotation in wash/agitate cycle.

Let me ask this if you open the lid and try to spin the wash basket CW rotation will it rotate CW? A normal machine will not allow you rotate the Wash Basket CW by hand you can only rotate the wash basket CCW by hand the Spin Direction. I can’t rotate the Wash basket CW unless I drop the belt off the Clutch Pulley.

“”Whats next a new clutch i guess“”

I would only buy a replacement clutch pulley if I could return it if it’s not the issue.

Let me know how you make out I’ll offer whatever help I can……Rich

Maybe some of the repair techs out there may have some hands on experience with the FAV6800A or FAV9800A model and will chime in.

    Kelly,

I did a little search a while back I worked with a forum member with the wash basket rotating CW in wash/agitate cycle.

    http://www.fixya.com/support/t2265477-tu...

See my comments in the post about the Agitator shaft bearings in my Clutch Fix post.

""Beraing on lleft is 6002DU replace with 6002RS...... Bearing on the right is a caged needle bearing INA"" These are the bearings that the Agitator shaft rides in to drive the tranny.

I have replaced those bearings in the Spinner Support just for the hands on. I feel this could be an issue..

I don't know how far you want to go with this. If you were in the 19344 area I would give you a hand......Rich

    Kelly,

I just got home from work 02:30AM here in Honey Brook Pa.

From what you described you had a lot of rust built up in the Agitator shaft.

The Spinner Support rides in the Outer Tub bearings. The wash basket and Tranny are bolted the Spinner support. The Agitator shaft rides in a caged needle bearing (INA SCE-910) at the Clutch Pulley side and a 6002 RS roller bearing on the Splined end of the Agitator shaft that drives the tranny. I feel with all that crud/rust built up in the Agitator shaft the drive system was binding (increased rotational resistance of the agitator shaft cause the slow CW rotation in agitate/wash cycle i.e. the Clutch pulley rotating CW. I mentioned that in one of my comments.

    Some Pics of the Tranny sitting on top of the Spinner Support;

    Agitator shafy removed showing the caged needle bearing INA SCE-910;

    The Agitator Shaft Spline end mates to tranny female spline;

    Some more pics;

This is the Top of Spinner Support showing the 6002RS bearing the splined end of the agitator shaft rides in.

Anyway with what you describe I feel you may have the slow CW rotation in wash/agitate cycle start up again.

As I mentioned a Tub Seal replacement would be high on my to do list.

Along with a bearing replacement for the Spinner Support assembly.

Yea this board is not the best for us DIY'ers it's geared up for repair tech responses like "call in a qualified repair tech and spend $400 for what you just did"".

    Let me know what next.......Rich

I go by D*ick but this BS board stars my name out... watch **** ....:)

    FAV6800A FAV9800A Jul 16, 2010

I did not answer this ""Exactly what keeps the basket from turning CW.""

Just the normal drive line/system components. When you have no Agitator shaft or tranny drive system binding the Wash Basket will not rotate CW. The only way to get the Wash Basket rotate CW is to remove the drive belt. If you remove the motor drive belt form the Clutch Pulley in a normal FAV6800A/FAV9800A you can then rotate the Wash Basket CW.... but I feel you had agitator shaft binding in the bearings the Agitator shaft rides in.....That's my WAG and I'm sticking to it.....;)

    Now I'm unplugging

D*ick..... my new sign off..... with this BS parsing of my name by this board.

Whoa I missed this ""I took some dirt and mushed it in around the spinner shaft "" Dirt?

Once you get thru the ***** of laundry I would consider a cleaning of the Agitator Shaft and at least the caged needle bearing at the clutch pulley end of the Spinner Support.

While you have it out I would replace the Tub Seal and Tranny O-ring. You are looking at maybe $30 or less for those parts Tub seal and Tranny O ring seal .

If you have no Outer Tub bearing noise I would hold off on punching out the bearings and replacing.

Barb,

First two digits of your serial number of the machine would be handy. The Service Manual will show you where to find that info...........D*ick

What year was my washer built.

The manufacture date is determined by the SERIAL number. The following link explains:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r2880528-determining_age_maytag_appliance

Look at the last two letters in your serial number. The 1st letter represents the YEAR the appliance was manufactured. The 2nd letter represents the MONTH.

If you have questions, let me know. I hope this helps you.
