Philips DVP3960: works, but no 480p, scrambled display

This has been a good DVD player for nearly 3 years now, but, while it still plays, it seems to have defaulted to 480i regardless of whether it's set on 480i or 480p, and the display window often shows constantly scrambling characters, rather than the usual chapter numbers. I tried unplugging it, but that didn't help.

Thanks for the comments. I've done enough electronic sleuthing that I should have connected the DVP 3960 to our other HD TV before posting the question. I just moved it to the other set and progressive works fine, so the problem must be with the other TV. I'm going to try it there with HDMI to see if that works normally. I've had it connected with component cables.

Hello,

The problem is from your convergence IC, it need to be replaced. Get a repair guy to replace the convergence IC of your DVD player and the DVD player would be in good condition again.

But before you get the repairman to come fix it, these are simple things you should try out on the DVD player to see if it is just troubleshooting it needs.

Try to disconnect the prong cables from the player and connect it back.

Then you can further try to connect the DVD player to another television to see if it works.

If it works, then the problem is from the connection to the television, but if it does not, then there is a system error that is making the dvd player go back to the 480i.

Also you can get the appropriate software and flash the dvd player, and it will automatically restore the factory settings of the dvd player.

Take care

Hi,

I have few options for you to get the video back on HDMI:
1. Try out changing the video resolution on HDMI set up (select 480p..1080p).
2. Play NTSC disc (to get the 60Hz out from Player). If your are in US.
3. Select the TV system as AUTO/NTSC to get the 60Hz out only on HDMI.
4. if the Deep Color option is available in HDMI set up menu..set it to OFF.

Let me know if you tried all these and still no output.

Disc is not working. Error message No disc

Try cleaning both the disk and the lens of the dvd player. Sometimes even a little bit of dust can make your dvd player go ballistic. Brands like Sony,Philips and LG are very sensitive. If anything else fails, you can take it to a repair shop to find out if the lens isn't cracked or the LED isn't responding while trying to read the disk.
