Question about Toro Garden

RE: 42'' zero turn Toro with Kohler 19 hp. Ever since I bought it new, it has used oil, I am very dissatisfied with it. Model 74360 Serial #270000001. The starter relay doesn't work correctly. It will not start unless you jump-start the relay. The blades does not match what the mfg. says - this one (the center) has a round center and the books says it should have a star center. Can not purchase the blades at Home Depot, where I purchased the mower. So, people look around and ask more questions before buying a Toro.

Hi and welcome to Fixya. I am Kelly.

After researching I have discovered that your mower is a 2007 model and the first one of the series given the serial number of 270000001. Let me first say that I am not defending Toro in any way. My only intent is to possibly help you resolve the jump starting issue and where to find parts.

As far as the jump starting the relay issue You may want to take a look at items 6 and 7 on this page and perform a continuity check of both switches by probing the wires.

Choose the 2007 year at the bottom then (Select the Electrial assy Diagram) https://homeownersolutions.toro.com/portal/server.pt/community/product_center/225#drawingDiagramPage

Additionally the battery itself is 3 years old. Riding lawn mower batteries usually only last 3 seasons. Also the battery leads on riding mowers take a real beating. Most of the time they start breaking down right at the terminals. The leads do the self breaking routine from all the lawn bumps so you have a 20 strand wire that as the mower ages it is using 12 or less strands because the other strands have broken from bouncing and vibration. This is typical regardless of brand. When any riding mower comes into the shop the first thing we check is the battery cables and safety switches. If nothing else to do some preventative maintenance so it does not return to the shop in short order.

If this is the model and serial that you say it is... it seems that the original deck is not installed on the mower because per the serial number the original deck only had (2) TWO 21.6 inch in blades with the part number 110-6568-03

The original Deck part number is 110-6831 (2 blade)

I can not tell you if this is something that Home Depot did. (i.e swap out decks)

When you say it uses oil can I maybe get a response stating it uses ____ pints/quarts per ___ hours of use. Kohler engines are some of the most reliable ones out there for riding mowers and run smooth..

Also if you can come up with a deck model number from the decal on the deck itself I might be able to provide you with the blade part number and a source for your center blade.

Toro usually has a pretty good product but since about 2006 things have changed. Some are awesome.. others are no better than the bottom of the line mowers.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Kelly

Toro is a great brand, but the Home depot models are for home use. IF it won't start correctly you should troubleshoot the problem as this is a built in safey system for your benefit. There is a switch on both parking breaks, A switch to detect you sitting in the seat. The PTO must be disengaged. Check each of these. If you have your manual you can view the schematic diagram, and test each switch. If not, you can download a manual from Toro web site. According to your model and serial number your deck would only have two blades. They also have what they call "blade stiffeners" . Your results from buying power equipment from a big box store is typical. If you need service, pay a little more, and buy from your local power equipment distributor.

Why won't my Toro aero turn

First, make sure the steer stick in moving the lever into reverse. Please check this with the engine off

Second, Check the belt tensioner. Sometimes they end up stuck which has been known to cause the belt to slip on the left transaxle only.
Third, buy a new transaxle...

My Toro won't go in reverse on the left side.

Is the unit new? I saw a situation where Lowe's forgot to attach the steering arm. Then again, your pressure release valve (what allows for free manual movement) may be open.

Always have steering control arms out completely. It will not start if you don't.

The bypass levers (for manual pushing) MUST be engaged for motor drive.

Choke up?
