You need to boot from your original windows and it will detect the harddisk and format it and install the operating system.

SOURCE: Opening external drive case

Actual solution. The darker side panels pop off and they alone hold things together. Simply pry each side away at rear. That would be end with power and USB connections are.

SOURCE: does not boot just clicks

It sounds like your hard drive has crashed if all you're hearing is clicking noises and it no longer works. Unfortunately if this IS the case, you can't get the data off unless you have tons of money to pay a forensic data recovery specialist (crazy expensive). Sorry buddy.

SOURCE: My Maxtor personal storage 3100 clicking and not recognised

If you can hear mechanical sounds from the case the problem is in the hard disk and moving it to your laptop isn't the solution. In that case check for a data recovery company at your area as sooner as posible. If the sound is no mechanical I'll tell you the way to move the HD. Describe me the kind of sound.

Testimonial: "Thank you very much for this reply. The clicking noise is very quiet and soft and repeats about every second. Itis hard to describe further than this and if the noise was not as soft as it is, I would confident that it is mechanical but as the noise is so soft I am unsure. Does this help at all?"

This is a common problem, your drive is in what is known as safe mode or kernel mode, what has happened is some modules of the firmware have failed to load and so it is now only detecting the logic board. I'm afraid there won't be much you can do without the special software to read the firmware aspect of the drive, you need to load what is known as a loader which contains the code to boot the heard drive up so we can write to the firmware (the firmware is stored on the platters) so really your only option is to send it off to a data recovery company who have all the gear like Digital Recovery

How do I find the manufacture date on my Maxtor D540X-4K?

In general, hard drives are guaranteed by the manufacturer for one year. 3 years on premium drives. I don't consider older Maxtor drives premium! (probably personal bias).
I would think any 80GB IDE drive would work

60gb hard drive is knackered

you are not likely get parts for a hard drive. You simply replace them. If you have data to remove then there is a plethora of software to down load.[ PCIspector/BadCopy Pro to name but 2] You could also put it into the freezer overnight and try running it before it warms up.

Assuming this was your only hard disk, there is nothing on the disk for the BIOS to boot from. You need to boot from the installation disk for your operating system. The OS installer will then let you create a partition and install to it.

I shorted my 40GB!!

Hi theres a couple of ways i can think of, 1st, buy a replacement board but needs to be the same model and just replace it. you might get a cheap one from ebay. 2nd, if you phone maxtor and tell them u have a faulty hard drive, with important files they ask you to send it to them and they give you a price to get the information off, i cant remember how much it was the last time but its possible. all the best, and gl retrieving the info..
