Question about Whirlpool Refrigerators

1 Answer

I have a Whirlpool ED20ZX fridge. It currently does not have an icemaker. I have a working icemaker in a Kenmore 57282791. Can I place the icemaker from the Kenmore into the Whirlpool? The parts look almost the same on RepairClinic.com site. Thank you.

Yes both the parts look near to similar. But actually the voltages are different in both the parts. And also its not the exact same part.So it will not fit directly. But in case you get it any how fitted. Then also due to Kenmore voltage is higher then whirlpool. But still get both this parts checked by a refrigerator technician and ask him to confirm the voltage .And if its risky then ask him to connect voltage control resistor or in to the ice-maker circuit so you can get it connected without any voltage issues. Also to confirm first remove both the ice-makers from the unit.At the back side of the unit there is voltage and current description mentioned.Check out that.If its exact same then you can go for replacement.
Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

I have a Kenmore Coldspot m# 57282791. Last night, it stopped staying cold, and I have not heard the motor/compressor come on at all since then (the part that cools the fridge, right?) There is a small fan...

Hi,

If the compressor is not running, it could be either a bad relay or compressor. This is not an issue with defrost components or temp. control .If you have experience in repairing appliances, could take all precautions necessary and use multimeter - You could do a continuity check on compressor motor and all combination's. An infinity value on multimeter would confirm bad compressor.

On the side of the compressor you will see a box (maybe a cover) remove the cover if it has one and then remove the wire harness. next you will see the relay with the capacitor mounted to it. give the relay a tug and pull it off the side of the compressor. once you have it off pull the capacitor off and then give the relay a shake. If it rattles the relay is bad. if the relay does not rattle the compressor is bad and you will need to call a service guy to replace the compressor.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

My whirlpool ice maker makes ice but it builds an ice dam and ice cicles on the back of the unit.

there might be a crack in the mold of the icemaker. you can unplug the fridge and take out the icemaker. there should be three 1/4" screws holding it in place. visually inspect the icemaker mold the see if its cracked or flaking. if it is, the icemaker needs replacing. hope this helps.

My icemaker is not dumping the ice when it's frozen.

Replacing the icemaker is neither expensive nor hard. Order a replacement on the Internet.

Sounds like a malfunction in the icemaker itself.

Fridge won't make ice

There is an optics test procedure you can perform on your own to confirm what the repairman says. Assuming you have a whirlpool-made Kenmore (if you have a Pur water filter at the bttom left of your unit, you do), see here:

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/8527f904cc8ea8cd85256b5800672333/$FILE/4322658A.pdf

Basically, the icemaker won't initiate a harvest (dump) cycle unless the electric eye through that cutout at the top of your icemaker can see across the top of the dispenser. If the lens is dirty, or if either the emitter or receiver boards are bad, the optics won't connect. There's a simple diagnosis procedure in that pdf above. Since your fridge is from 2005 like mine, refer to the "post 2002 redesign" optics procedure. Basically the test is to open the fridge and look at the LED, then to close the flapper on the left wall of the freezer and see the change in LED behavior. This can confirm or deny an optics issue. Also, if you remove the little plastic grille at the bottom of your fridge, there'll be a piece of paper folded and stuffed in there with the diagnostic procedure in it as well. To do the full diagnostic procedure, you'll need to remove the icemaker and install a jumper, but to debug optics only, all you need to do is open the door, close the flapper, or maybe push in the door switch and look at how the LED responds.

Fridge Leaking

the icemaker can overfill causing water to run over into the freezer
the fill cup on the back of the icemaker could be frozen letting the water overflow into the freezer

if the fill cup is not frozen then you need a modlue for the ice maker if it is whirlpool built, if ge or frigidaire design then replace the icemaker
