Question about Briggs & Stratton Briggs Stratton Intek V - Twin Vertical Ohv Engine with Electric Start 22 Hp, 1" X 3 5/32" Shaft, ModelNo. 44K777 - 0027 - E1

Manual throttle doesn't slow engine speed

Just got a used mower that wouldn't run with a B&S Quattro 4 HP engine. Model number is 10A902 type 2273 E1. I replaced the manual primer with part number 694395 which said for a Quantum(not Quattro). The store did not carry primer specified for the Quattro 694394. Also replaced the carburator gasket, diaphram, carb screen and carb spring which came in B&S carb kit # 5083D for Quattro engines. Flushed old gas from tank and put in new fuel. Cleaned carb with spray carb cleaner while I had it off to replace diaphram and gasket.

Although it now starts on just one pull after pumping the primer bulb, the engine speed is racing and moving the manual throttle at the carb does not change the speed. What am I missing or forgetting here? I am not a pro at doing this, so if you can give ideas in simple terms I would appreciate any help.

SOURCE: replaced diaphram and gasket between tank and carb

This sounds like an airleak between the carb and the engine acting like the throttle is open.. Try and take some carb cleaner and spray it where the manifold bolts to the engine if you hear the engine bog or lower the rpm's then replace your manifold gasket should fix this problem

Check your rockers inside valve covers. They some time work loose. If they are loose the push rod will fall off rocker and cause the problem.

SOURCE: How do you remove the primer bulb on a model

Look at the outside of the plastic housing where the primer bulb is inserted, you will see an open area where there are 2 tabs, one on each side, using a small screwdriver, push these tabs inward to release them and slide the whole thing out of the hole including the primer bulb. The new primer bulb normally comes with a new mounting ring if you purchase it from a lawnmower dealer

Craftsman Riding Mower (24 HP 42 in cut Model 289254) with throttle issue. Very slow in 6th gear

follow the throttle cable all the way down to the engine. Have some one move the throttle up and down to see if the throttle plate is opening and closing all the way. You can loosen the screw holding the throttle cable and move it back and forth to see if it will allow the throttle plate to open and close correctly. It may have slipped when the assembler tried to tighten it.

MTD 4 Hp engine engine oscilates high and low like the engine is reving up and down

Most likely the carb is dirty and needs a good cleaning. You can start with the spray cleaner, but it is best to use a good quality fuel system or fuel injector cleaner that you can get at your favorite auto parts store. I use Lucas products, but there are several good ones out there. Mix it into your master can where you get your gas in from the pump. You can use it in all your equipment to keep the fuel system clean. That includes everything from your mower, weed eater, leaf blower, generator, ATV, chain saw, motorcycles or anything that runs on gas.

The reason the engine oscillates like is because the dirty carb doesn't allow the fuel to flow so it leans out and the engine speed slows so the governor gives it gas to speed it up again then when it come up releases the throttle then the engine slows again and because the carb is dirty the cycle continues. If the fuel injector/system cleaner doesn't get the job done the carb may need to come off for a manual cleaning.

Need to know how many turns do i turn out the needle valves on the 11 hp briggs @ stratton. need to know for everyone. thanks

On some float-type carburetors, you can adjust the air-fuel mixture and engine speed at idle. Check for an idle speed screw designed to keep the throttle plate from closing completely, and an idle mixture screw that limits the flow of fuel at idle. If your carburetor contains these screws, proceed below.
  1. With the engine off, remove the air filter and air cartridge.
  2. Locate the idle mixture screw and turn it clockwise until the needle lightly touches the seat. Then, turn the screw counterclockwise 1-1/2 turns.
  3. If your carburetor has a main jet adjustment screw at the base of the float bowl, turn the screw clockwise until you feel it just touch the seat inside the emulsion tube. Then, turn the screw counterclockwise 1 to 1-1/2 turns. Replace the air cleaner assembly and start the engine for final carburetor adjustments.
  4. Run the engine for five minutes at half throttle to bring it to its operating temperature. Then, turn the idle mixture screw slowly clockwise until the engine begins to slow. Turn the screw in the opposite direction until the engine again begins to slow (image A). Finally, turn the screw back to the midpoint.
  5. Using a tachometer to gauge engine speed (image B), set the idle speed screw to bring the engine to 1750 RPM for aluminum-cylinder engine or 1200 RPM for engine with a cast-iron cylinder sleeve.
  6. With the engine running at idle (image D), hold the throttle lever against the idle speed screw to bring the engine speed to "true idle." Then, repeat the idle mixture screw adjustments from Step 4 to fine-tune the mixture (image C).

Lawn mower chugging

better late than never, I have the same mower

there is no throttle control on these mowers, if you look under the air filter the throttle is balanced by a spring pulling in one direction and a lever controlled by engine speed. if the spring breaks or falls off the lever will wiggle back and forth, more gas if the engine slows, less if it speeds up. you end up going fast/slow/fast/slow etc.

The tension spring slows the switching down and smooths out the engine speed.

Briggs & Stratton Quattro lawn mower engine. Runs rich and unevenly. Suspect carb and have used sprey carb cleaner. Any suggestions??

A lot of time when the small motors on these push mowers surge it is a governing spring that is weak or broke. It does not hold enough tension and causes the valve to fluctuate. I have fixed this many time for a relatively cheap amount (under $5).
