I need to RE-FORMAT an acer aspire one hard drive. It did not come with any os disks, and I have to re-install an older version. When I try to over write the os, it will no allow it because the windows version is older that the current one, so I need to wipe the drive clean and start over.

I happen to have an Acer Aspire One with the original Atom processor. Instead of formatting the drive, try to choose to 'recover' the system so it goes back to its original factory state.

If you really want to wipe the drive, you could, but it would help to have a full version of Windows 7 or something (which is kind of expensive compared to the $299 I paid for the whole computer with windows xp on it).

You can also 'Restore' back to an earlier date, but this is not as effective as 'Recover'.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for your help. I do have an older version of windows xp, and an external drive, so I need to know how to wipe the drive clean (re-format).

I have tried the alt+f10, doesn't work. Went into f8 on start up like i did on an older laptop, but couldn't find the re-format drive option.

How do I completely wipe the drive and start over? Please help.... I'm not worried about the older os.

    Thank you.

actually, I have other computers that I have low level formatted, but I never did that to my Acer One because I put Windows 7 on to it with no problems, using an external DVD Writer Drive.

I'm sorry that I can't tell you exactly how to wipe the disk in this way, but as I said, I would just Recover if that's possible to the way it was when you bought it.

Is it not booting up to the part where you can do this?

ok, so I tried your next suggestion: f2, main, SATA to IDE. Went all through the f2 menus, there is no SATA. None.

Any other ideas? This is driving me crazy :S

I think I said I don't have specific knowledge on this aspect of the Acer Aspire One, because I updated the operating system to Windows 7 (and plan never to go back to xp).

I don't understand what you mean by F2 and SATA and IDE when it applies to this problem of reformatting.

But, I wish you the best of luck in fixing this problem to your satisfaction.

All I can say, is that sometimes there are no solutions to problems when dealing with 'puters.

Operating system not found

No, you won't get the OS to automatically install on the new drive. The OS is not stored in the BIOS chip (or a similar permanent location inside the computer). You will need an OS install disc (not an upgrade disc). Windows Vista Home Premium or Basic was the original OS on most of the Acer Aspire 4530 series. Acer appears to have drivers for the system for XP through Windows 7 to get the hardware to work. You will need to have these most of these ready before you install your OS. Put them on a flash drive or optical disc using another computer.

This computer may work with Unix as well. However, driver issues may be a factor. You can try most versions of Unix from a CD (LiveCD) to test it out.

When you get a new hard drive, install it into the laptop. Then put the OS disk in the optical drive bay. Boot to the optical drive. Follow the directions for formatting the hard drive and installing the OS. (Of course you will need a drive that doesn't have a higher capacity than the BIOS supports.) The motherboard needs to recognize the drive.

If you find a member of a Windows User Group, they may have Windows install discs available. The license number on the label of your computer will probably work as your license key. (The key for a computer like this is locked to the CPU and motherboard; unless someone upgraded the OS to Windows 7 or downgraded to XP, this should be the key you need.) Use the information on the label to obtain the correct version of Vista (the Basic install disc may not work for installing Home Premium). You also need to match the 32-bit or 64-bit install disc (and the service pack you need).

I hope this helps.

(An Acer recovery disc wouldn't help you. Most of those are completely locked to the original hardware (including hard drive) and look for the recovery partition that was on that hard drive.)

My acer aspire one has a hard drive failure on the following disks IDE/SATA.I diagnosed it then got the following report. HDD doesn't respond to system commands Boot sector damaged read time...

You need to format your hard disk. Please note that formatting will erase all you data from the hard disk and all the software including the Operating system.

If you have your OS master CD you can insert it in the cd/dvd drive and restart the laptop. This will detect the OS CD and try to install it. In the installation process there is an option "Format your hard drive". You should select that option. Then it will format, mark the bad sectors, create a new boot sector and install the OS. You will be just fine.

Doesn't install windows all version, hard disk not detect. another OS ubuntu is ok. please help me

You will need to go into your BIOS and change the Plug and Play option to ON and move the CD ROM to be the first boot device. Once you do this, Start your Windows install with the CD/DVD in the pc and select a new/clean install and format the hard drive. (Complete format deleting all files.) This should do the trick.

Good Luck

I have an acer aspire 6930 after a little over a year the hard drive crashed. I bought a new hard drive and also purchased the receovery discs from Acer but I keep receiving an error code restore failed...

Sorry you are having trouble. I can help you with this. The "Format" command has been around for a long time. It used to be included on the start disks that came with Dos, Windows 95, and Windows 98. Now that the Operating Systems (OS) are much bigger and most pcs do not have floppy drives we have to use other methods to get to the format command. Now comes the hard part. Format is a DOS command. To use you have to be at the c: prompt. It is still included in most OS's but the trick is to get to it. Try this: Boot to the CD that contains your OS. Then search the disk for the format command. Once you know you have it you will have to pick the option to goto the recovery console. Here you will have to have the administrator password to continue. If you need more info please ask

Acer Netbook OS

if you are getting this message about corrupted partitions, you need to check and possibly replace the hard drive. There is a program to check the hard drive called Hard Disk Sentinel. It is designed for SSD hard drives like the Acer Aspire One has. Yours has a 160GB hard drive in it now.

Acer aspire 5000 laptop. black screen says NTLDR missing, press any key to restart..but it will not do anything just stays on the black screen with the message

try repairing the OS with the installation disk. if this doesn't work, try formatting the hard-drive, but remember to connect the hard-drive to another computer and backup your important files. this is the simplest way to solve it, as trying to restore the system manually requires lots of command lines and a system boot disk.

Error 0x00007b with acer aspire 4530

I think your Hard Disk is affected with some bad sectors. Try formatting the entire Hard disk. Remove anyother devices that you have, like any memory cards in slot or cds or USB drives etc.

Thank you!

Unable to format hard disk.

You did not mention what steps you have tried. and what the problem occurs when you try to format. It also depends which OS you are using.

There is a solution very easy to use. If you have Win98 or older version then try to boot with command prompt only aund then run FDISK. Using FDISK delete all partition and create new partions, then try to format and install your OS.

For Boot Disk you can surf/download from BootDisk (click here)

If you want detail help, please post your problem in details.
