Before suspecting the gas valve to be the problem, replace the safety element. More often than not to be the cause of the problem. The element is the bulb element that second larger flame (actuation pilot) is heating when the thermostat is turned on.

A natural gas oven makes a good alternative to an electric oven. Initially, a gas oven may cost more to acquire than the electric range. However, over time, it may well work out as a more cost effective choice. A gas fueled oven is cheaper than an electric oven because electricity costs more than gas. Also, the warm-up and cool-down time is more rapid with gas than electricity. More energy is utilized by an electric oven. With a gas oven, you get better cooking results because gas cooking doesn’t dry out food like electricity. However, gas ovens are not without their disadvantages. Below are 4 common problems with a natural gas oven.
Delayed IgnitionOne of the advantages of a gas oven is the rapid on-off time unlike electricity. However, sometimes even after you ignite the oven, it takes a while before it operates. Delayed ignition may be caused by blocked ignition ports. It is best to have a qualified technician examine the gas oven. They will be able to determine if the ignition port is clogged and can fix the problem for you. Delayed ignition has the potential to cause a fire or explosion, which could damage the oven glass viewing pane and other internal parts. It may be necessary to have your ignitor replaced if it turns out to be faulty.
Gas OdorA gas odor when the oven is in use indicates that something is wrong. In most cases, defective gas valves cause gas emissions. Gas valves may sometimes open up too soon and do not allow the gas ignition to reach the right temperature. This lack of synchrony results in a gas leak.
A gas odor may also be caused by damaged gas valves. A hole or **** in the valve is a perfect way to let out gas. Any gas odor must be addressed immediately. If left unchecked, it can cause a fire or explosion. Leaking gas can also poison household members.
Inadequate LightingSometimes the gas burners in the oven fail to light up completely. Even when turned on to the highest heat, the burners still do not light up sufficiently. Insufficient lighting affects the cooking efficiency of your oven. The most likely cause of burners not lighting up completely is restricted cross-over ports. Open your gas oven and examine the cross-over ports located on the burner tube. These are tiny holes or a slot on the burner tube. Use a small wire brush or old toothbrush to scrub carefully at the ports. You should be able to clear any blockages.
Oven Burner Fails to LightThe oven pilot light usually lights up when you turn your gas oven on. The light is located at the back of the oven. If the pilot light doesn’t light, it is possible that the pilot light electrode is dirty and needs cleaning. The electrode is a tiny metal rod located between the tubes that connect to the burners. Use an old toothbrush to clean the electrode. Relight the oven pilot light after cleaning.

Thanks for using fixya...Good luck

Sounds like a fuel problem. Pilot should light as long as plunger is depressed.

Pilot light wont stay onfor outside pool heater. Gas co made a service call & relit the pilot light it went out again 4 days later.

There is a thermo couple that keeps the gas on. The pilot light bracket has a small screen where the gas comes through that can get clogged and cause the pilot light to burn away from the thermo couple which would cause it to think the flame has went out and shut the gas off. Or the thermo couple has went bad itself. If you try cleaning the screen use canned air and gently blow it through the orfice once you have taken it off. If you don't know what a thermo couple is or looks like here's a picture of a generic one that will give you an idea. Usually there's a bracket that holds this in place. f1b528a.jpg

Pilot light does not stay on.

Be sure to keep the button pushed for 45 seconds AFTER lighting the pilot. If the pilot continues to go out, the problem is most likely the thermocouple. A replacement thermocouple can be purchased at the local hardware store for under $20.00.

The pilot light will not stay lit. A new

Try cleaning the orfice for the pilot light. You will have to dis-assemble the fuel lines from the thermostat to the burner to get at it. The orfice has an extremly small hole in it, do not make it any larger, just clean it out.

Pilot light to oven went out

It could be that the safety ($150 to $250) is getting old, or grease filled. It could also mean the thermocouple ($7 to $12) is going bad, or has a bad connection. If the copper jacket of the thermocouple is blackened near the pilot, broken or cracked in anyway, it may not be working properly, as it generates a small voltage when heated, less than100th of an AAA battery, to keep your pilot lit. If the pilot orfice is clogged with dust it produces a smaller, less hot flame, which also lowers the output of the thermocouple. If I was performing the service, you would automatically get a pilot cleaning, and a thermocouple, the safety could still be bad, and confirming this is a 50/50 chance to begin with, but it is a cheaper start. Good luck, ask more if you need too, thank you, an Happy New Year.

you could be right it could be a dirty pilot remove the pilot assembly and clean it has an orifice inside where the gas has to pass through its about the size of the point of a pin so its possible that its clogged, if this doesnt work the thermocuple might be bad
