Sounds like your USB port is not strong enough to run it. Try a different USB port or getting a high speed USB 2.0 card to install into your PC. If on a laptop you may have to search the net for the drivers, or try a program like hddhackr.

Hi Guest!

Assuming you are on Windows XP or Vista,

go and right click on My Computer, click Manage.

go down to the entry labelled Disk Management.

See if you can see that drive listed in this view.

if you can, it is likely that a drive letter is not associated to the drive itself!

just right click on the drive, and click on Change Drive Letter or Path.

Select a unique drive letter, and boom, it should pop up as a removable drive.

If you havent yet formatted the device, you can do that through here as well. Remember that Fat32 will not show the full drive amount, I recommend NTFS, or make several FAT32 partitions. This can all be done through this Disk Management window.

for help on Formatting , that should be a seperate question however.

You may be able to see it in disk management.
Right click my computer / manage / disk management, wait for a few seconds and your drives will load in, if its there you can right click on it and explore

You can install this hard drive into an USB hard drive adapter case and use it as an external USB hard drive for back ups and file transfer from one computer to another.

My hitachi hard drive Hitachi HDT721064SLA380 isn't detected by computer and i can here a sound "tic tic" in the HDD ,Thanks .

Hi Welcome to Fixya!
Your hdd is making that sound mainly because it could already be damaged inside. That is also the reason why it is not being detected by the computer.
Same thing happened to me with my 120gb Seagate Barracuda.
Consider in replacing the hard drive on your computer.

Hope this could help!
Have a great day!

Look for electronic board or complete hard disk Hitachi Deskstar IDE 120 Go HDS722512VLAT20 in order to read an identical disk for which the electronic board is burnt.

Good luck. Try searching on eBay, and use "contact seller" to confirm that they are selling _exactly_ what you are wanting to buy.

Hi there i hav ea maxtor onetouch 4 mini 120 gb.

Remove the hard drive from the Maxtor case, purchase an USB hard drive adapter case, and install the hard drive inside this case. Then you can connect this to the computer's USB port and if the hard drive is OK then this computer will detect it as an external USB hard drive, then you can open the folders and files and back them up.

I have a SimpleTech 120GB external hard drive. The USB connection port at the circuit board is broken. Can I buy a new plug-in circuit board and hard case for this unit?

Simpletechs have a three year warranty so if your drive is newer than that it is covered. You can go to www.simpletech.com (they are really hitachi drives) for details on warranty repair. If you are sure its not covered the case can be opened and inside you will find a SATA drive and you can buy a new SATA external enclosure for 19.99 at Radioshack. This includes the circuit board, cable, and new case.

Why can't I access anything that was copied onto my Toshiba 500G external harddrive. The computer doesn't recognize the program that made any of it, even though it's the same computer.

It is very possible the voltage on your computer's USB port is not handling the load. I would buy a "powered" USB 2.0 hub, plug it into your computer's usb port and plug the harddrive into the powered hub.

This is typically a corrupt mass storage driver in windows. You can try removing C:\windows\driver cache (may be c:\windows\system32\drivercache too.

Then reboot; and see how it works. This resolves most of of the issues. http://techrxgb.com (please join us on facebook for hints / tips and tricks)
