Is this a flat panel monitor? If so it is likely to be eithe rthe back light or the invertor. Invertors are relativly cheap if you can find one - try bitsnpcs.co.uk but if it is a screen gicve up as uneconomical usually.
Good luck

No picture

Sounds like you have a backlight problem. To verify this, turn on the set, dim the lights in the room, and shine a bright flashlight on the screen. If you see a faint picture you have a backlight fault. It could be as simple as a bad capacitor in the power supply, or a faulty inverter board, or in rare cases a bad backlamp.

What's your problem?the screen turns very dim to where you can barely see the picture

Your monitor is going bad or your video card is going bad. Try using another monitor on the computer to isolate the problem. Borrow a monitor from a neighbor, friend, relative or co-worker and see if you can barely see the icons and desktop on it. If the borrowed monitor is bright and clear and you can see things ok, then your original monitor is going bad. If the borrowed monitor shows the same problem of barely being able to see things, then your video card in the computer is bad.

My laptop will not show any picture but a black screen. i hear that it is on. my start up tone plays but there is no visual. the screen is just black

F1 and F2 on the keyboard will make the screen go dim or get brighter. Check this first. If the issue still is happening, connect an external display to the computer.
If the a picture show up on the external display but not the internal one. You have an issue with the LCD module and it will need to be replaced.
If you don't get a picture on either external or internal display you have an issue with the video card. Since the video card is attached to the logic board the whole logic board will need to be replaced.

Compaq notebook monitor no longer shows pictures . Left screen for a few minutes and when I returned to the room, the screen was showing snow only. Rebooted and the screen has never returned a picture.

You could have a faulty LCD screen or a faulty video cable or conector. Try reseating the video cable or connector first.
Then
To determine if you have a LCD screen or video card problem, read this and follow the instructions. Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashs on red/pink and off. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickering on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp.
Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case. The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

Dim picture

This is the way how to examine where the problem is. If the screen is going dark. You have to check that you can see the image on screen by shining a flashlight into the screen, not directly but find the best angle to the screen and take a look very closely. If you can see the icons (Power on both cpu and monitor), there will be a minor problem. Like me, I can see window image using flashlight and check lamps inside. Some of them were broken. If you cannot see any icon on the screen. I would say that there are some problems with inverter board. If you have soldering tool and want to fix it by yourself, check the caps first. It may cause this problem. Some caps might show leaking or dark spot on the board because of too high temp. If you don't have soldering tool, you better go get a technician to do so.

Screen is on but picture dose not show... cables connected

Solution, replace monitor with a new one.
I have found, at my shop, that getting parts for these things can be pricey and by the time I charge labor as well, could just buy a new one.
Probably a bad internal power supply or the inverter that powers the bulb(s) went out, which is sometimes built in with the power supply itself. If, and I stress IF, the parts are available, be prepared to pay more than its worth.
Pick up a new one, shop around on different brands. Some manufacturers offer 3 year warranties. ;)
