A smoking fan motor implies that there is a winding short circuit. Best to discard the fan and buy new rather than taking a chance on a possible fire hazard. Good luck!

My Vornado VH2 heater stops heating several moments after switching on. The fan runs but no heat. The heating elements never get hot but all the wiring appears to be firmly in place. The tilt shutoff...

A big problem with these heaters ans well as others is the motor driving the fan. The bearings get stiff from dirt and do not spin fast enough activating the over temp device of the heating element. Check the motor out by placing the unit in fan mode them pull the plug or turn off looking at the fan to see how many revolutions is makes with no power applied. It should rotate like five times or more indicating freeness. If it hals to a stop immediately after power is removed the motor bearings are tight.
If your handy you take apart and oil the shafts using 3inone motor lube. Clean the motor of dust and dirt drop a few drops on the shafts near the bearings then work it in by hand rotating the blades. Do this a few times reassemble then ler ripp!!!

Model FA1-0013 TYPE SWAN SERIAL # MAY00 VORNADO FAN When you plug it in and turn on the switch it does not work.

The motor has a single-use fuse in the run winding; that may be tripped. Or there could be no power going to the motor. Some of the swans had a power lead that was too short and pulled out of the switch. Take the 5 feet/screws out of the fan and remove the bottom plate. Are any of the wires loose that go to the switch? One power lead goes to the white wire that runsd directly to the motor: is that hooked up? If you need more help, contact me.

Vornado Circulating Fan - motor will run but blades will not turn.

Does the motor spin, but the blade is not turning?
The motor has a D shaped shaft. If the hole in the blade that the shaft goes in is rounded, then the blade will spin. In that case you need a new blade. Vornado can supply that.

3 speed standing fan. #1 the blade barely rotates.#2 a little faster. #3 it starts slow then speeds up like it's going to take off. It also makes an annoying sound like it's rubbing on something or is...

It is the motor. Probably needs cleaning and lubrication.
You can send it to Vornado.
It is not hard to get apart, just draw a diagram of what color wire is what speed.
You "could" do it yourself.

The compressor runs, but the fan doesnt work when we trouble shooted it. we found out it has power when we bypassed the switch and tested it. we pulled out the control box and it doesnt look like anything...

Hi, after reading you're problem, I found that you did the right thing. If you bypassed the switch and now you have power to the condenser motor but it doesn't operate, the motor is faulty, as you are eliminating the switch sending power to the fan motor. If you have power going into one side of the switch and you jumped it over, and the motor starts, the switch is at fault. So, you did the right thing! Sometimes you cant tell by looking at the switch wiring to no if it is at fault. In the field, we use jumper wires everyday to bypass components to check them out.In you're situation, both the compressor and condenser fan motor operate from this same switch, and the compressor was running. So, that tells me without having to bypass it that the fan motor is the faulty one, or the compressor would also be off. You may have to find one at a appliance parts house, or order one online. Sounds to me that you will have no problem changing this out. Best of luck to you, and Sincerely,
Shastalaker7

We have a very old Vornado fan that works great but needs a switch. We can start/stop it by plugging it in, but would like to replace the switch. Can you tell me where I can buy one?

Is it a single speed motor? All you need is a common toggle switch with two terminals and two positions (on/off). A good hardware store or farm supply store should have these, just check the amp. rating (10 should be good enough)
Always put the switch in the hot wire, usually black, maybe the fan is old enough that it doesn't have a polarized plug. If you change the cord, switch the hot side.
